Chapter 100
Ethan caught that look, too.
Ethan looked down as he rolled up his sleeves. The veins on the back of his hands stood out, tracing up his forearms and disappearing into his muscle.
He slid his hands into his pockets, radiating a cold, lifeless energy.
Mia tried to make herself invisible.
Finally, the elevator doors slid open. They stepped out one after the other, but both stopped at their doors at the same time. Their eyes locked in a strange moment of silent understanding.
Mia wanted to ask if he had anything else for her to do today.
But the moment she met Ethan’s gaze, the words died in her throat.
She waited for him to speak first.
He didn’t. The silence between them grew heavy, almost suffocating.
Ethan!”
A suite door swung open from the inside. Chloe Bennett threw herself into Ethan’s arms. When she spotted Mia standing there, her eyes instantly turned sharp and defensive.
She yanked Ethan toward the room. “Did you eat lunch yet? I’m starving!”
I already ate,” Ethan said.
Chloe dragged him inside and slammed the door shut.
Mia pulled her key card from her pocket and let herself into her room. She hadn’t even caught her breath when her phone started buzzing.
It was Jaxon.
She had never saved Jaxon Rivers’ number, but after so many calls, it was burned into her
memory.
Mia took a deep breath and swiped to answer.
‘Mia, if you don’t give me a straight answer today, I’m going straight to Ethan. I’ll tell him you’re carrying his baby.”
Mia stayed silent for a few seconds. She walked over and collapsed onto the sofa, her mind a complete mess. She didn’t even know where to begin.
“Just ask,” she said. “I’ll answer.”
Jaxon chuckled on the other end of the line. He sounded smug, clearly enjoying the fact that he finally had Mia right where he wanted her.
“That hickey… Ethan leave it there?”
Mia gave a faint “Yeah.” She quickly followed up with an explanation. “He only did it so you’d stop bothering me.”

Jaxon let out a sharp whistle. “Damn. I didn’t realize Ethan was that possessive.”
It wasn’t possessiveness. It was control.

Mia stayed quiet. If he didn’t ask, she wasn’t going to talk. Jaxon’s mind worked in twisted ways, and she didn’t want to give him any more ammo to spin some crazy new theory.
“He really has no clue you’re pregnant?” Jaxon asked, sounding skeptical.
“He doesn’t.” Her voice was exhausted, but firm.
Jaxon went silent. He was probably trying to figure out if she was telling the truth.
After a long beat, he finally spoke. “Tell you what. I’ll give you two hundred thousand dollars. Break your contract, quit the company, and just disappear. What do you say?”
Mia’s heart skipped a beat. She waited a few seconds before answering. “That’s a lot of money. It would take me a lifetime to pay that back. And just so we’re clear, I’m not going to work for Riverside.”
She threw the ball back into his court. Two hundred thousand dollars wasn’t pocket change; he was the one who needed to think this through, not her.
So you’re really leaving Northbrook?” Jaxon asked. “Where are you
headed?”
Emerald Bay. That’s the plan for now,” Mia said honestly.
He already had the ultimate leverage over her. There was no point in hiding the rest.
Text me your bank details. I’ll have the money wired to you right now,” Jaxon Rivers said, his fingers flying across his laptop. “Get back to Northbrook and sign those termination papers with Bayview. There’s a flight in two hours. You’ll make it.”
He was right. If Mia Carter left now, she’d hit the office just before closing. She could go straight to the HR Department and sign the resignation.
Today was the day. She would finally cut ties with Bayview. She would finally be done with Ethan.
‘Once you’re back on your feet and working, you’ll pay me back in monthly installments until the two million is gone. Then we’re even.” Jaxon had the whole thing mapped out in a matter of minutes.
Mia knew she didn’t really have a choice. She thought it over one last time and nodded. “Okay. Deal.”
