Chapter 101
“Fine then,” Jaxon’s voice regained its usual playful, lazy drawl. “I finally believe you now.”
Mia froze. “What do you mean?”
Jaxon let out a soft chuckle. “It means I won’t be paying that $2 million breach of contract penalty for you, but-”
‘Click.
Mia hung up and tossed her phone aside. There wasn’t much surprise or anger on her pale face. Only a deep, endless sense of numbness and resignation.
Jaxon was handled for now, but her heart only felt heavier.
The next morning, Ethan took her to see Marcus again, this time at his home. Mia was left to chat with Evelyn while Ethan and Marcus went to the tea room for a private discussion.
‘So, do you think they’ll close the deal today?” Evelyn sipped her juice, her eyes squinting slightly as she looked out at the garden full of flowers.
Mia nodded slightly. “I hope so.”
Evelyn set her glass down and leaned toward Mia, resting her arm on the chair’s handle. “I didn’t realize your boss was such a big shot. That fiancée of his… she really doesn’t deserve him.”
Evelyn didn’t usually follow business news and knew little about the local corporate scene. However, the recent headlines about Ethan and Chloe had been everywhere. She’d seen them on her feed a few times, which was why Ethan had looked familiar the day before. After a quick search last night, she realized exactly who he was.
Mia didn’t know Evelyn’s background, but the woman carried herself with an undeniable air of elegance. Her amily had to be prominent-likely even more so than the Bennetts, judging by her tone.
Ms. Bennett and Mr. Hale are childhood sweethearts,” Mia said neutrally. “They’re well-matched in social
status.”
Evelyn curled her lip. “Are they? The girl isn’t even that pretty. Honestly, you and Ethan look like a much better
natch.”
Mia forced a small, self-deprecating smile. “You’re joking, Mrs. Ford. My background doesn’t even come close to Mr. Hale’s.”
Evelyn scoffed. “Background? What century are we living in? Who cares about social status anymore? You’re both good-looking. He’s got the build, you’ve got the figure-you’re a match made in heaven.”
Mia looked at her in surprise. It was rare to find someone in high society who prioritized looks over pedigree.
‘Marcus and I were college classmates,” Evelyn said with a bright smile. “I came from a single-parent home and grew up in the slums. The Fords have generations of wealth behind them. Marcus was a legitimate Golden Boy Do you think we were ‘well-matched’?”
Evelyn’s gaze briefly swept over Mia’s stomach before she added, “I’m just talking. Don’t mind me.”
After all, as far as she knew, Mia had a husband and a baby on the way.

Mia never would have guessed Evelyn came from such humble beginnings. The grace she exuded must have been cultivated over years of being pampered by Marcus.
“If you were single, I’d play matchmaker myself,” Evelyn added with genuine regret. “I’d make your boss reconsider. Think of the genetics you two would have. What a waste.”
Mia just smiled and listened. It was just idle chatter, and she didn’t take it to heart. Her primary job was to keep Evelyn happy, no matter what she said.
An hour later, Ethan and Marcus emerged from the tea room.
Mia stood up to say her goodbyes. “Mrs. Ford, it was a pleasure meeting you. If you’re ever in Northbrook, please let me know. I’d love to host you.”
‘I’ll be there next month,” Evelyn replied with a wink.
