His Secret Baby: Six Months After Divorce (Mia and Ethan) novel Chapter 443

Chapter 443

Mia took ten minutes to whip up a simple hangover soup.

When she brought it out to Jaxon, the hot steam swirled between them.

From outside the kitchen window, Ethan saw the two of them sitting close together on the sofa.

His brow furrowed, his eyes darkening to an abyssal depth. He pulled a cigarette from his pocket, tucked it between his lips, and lit it.

Inside the apartment, Mia kept a two-meter distance from Jaxon.

She turned to him. “Can you tell me now?”

The person in charge of your orphanage? She’s spent every cent you and Nina gave her.”

axon clicked his tongue in pity. “Did you know she’s a gambler?”

Mia’s eyes widened in shock. “Are you… are you sure you didn’t get that wrong?”

How could I?” Jaxon pulled a stack of photos from his inner suit pocket and handed them over. “See for yourself.”

Mia took the photos.

There were dozens of them, each taken at different times but in the same place, and all featuring the same person.

Aunt May looked like a completely different person. The woman at the orphanage, who always wore worn-out lothes and an apron with a bare face, was now wearing a flaming red dress and heavy makeup, sitting at a ambling table.

The sharp, greedy glint in her eyes reflected the stacks of cash on the table.

This…” Mia felt the photos were too surreal. She questioned him, “These are Photoshopped, aren’t they?”

I have no grudge against her. Why would I make up a rumor like this?” Jaxon thumped his chest. “I had my people lig this up.”

Mia’s head began to throb.

She flipped through the photos again. Some even showed her younger self from twenty years ago.

This meant Aunt May had been gambling since she was young.

Mia suddenly remembered a few times when she was a child. She had woken up in the middle of the night to find Aunt May’s bed empty.

She and Nina had searched the entire orphanage but couldn’t find a trace of her. They had eventually huddled ogether in the corner of the bed and fallen asleep.

When they woke up, Aunt May was back, claiming they had just been sleepwalking and had seen things.

There were many memories like that, but she had never taken them to heart; after all, she had been too young back

then.

Later, when she and Nina went to boarding school, they rarely went back to stay. After they started working, they

basically never stayed the night at the orphanage.

The money she and Nina had given Aunt May this time had been lost to gambling.

But where had the money from before come from?

“Want me to look into her for you?”

Jaxon had only asked his people to trace the source of the money Mia provided, which led to the discovery of Aunt May’s gambling. He was waiting for Mia’s instructions for anything further.

Mia opened her mouth to ask for his help, but then she went silent.

“Come on, with our relationship, what’s wrong with me helping you out?” Jaxon sat up straight. “I’m helping you now because I truly consider you a friend!”

“I don’t distrust you. I just wanted to remind you that being friends with me doesn’t offer any benefits.”

Mia and Jaxon weren’t in the same social circle. Friendship required equality. There were far too many things Jaxon could help her with, and those would be favors she could never truly repay.

“Mia, that’s just boring,” Jaxon lectured her. “Friends aren’t commodities for equal exchange. As long as you can provide emotional value and feel comfortable together, that’s enough.”

He shook his leg and continued, “When I go out to eat with my friends, I never let them pay. Whether I’m in a good or bad mood, day or night, they’re willing to come out and drink with me as long as I call.”

‘Of course, I’m not an idiot. I’ve kicked out the ones who were just trying to piggyback off
