Chapter 54
Mia stared at him. She didn’t understand how someone as sharp as Leo in the boardroom could be so incredibly naive about this.
Even if she wasn’t pregnant, she had to leave. Chloe couldn’t stand the sight of her, and there was no world where they could coexist.
You’re forgetting something, Leo,” Mia said quietly. “My history with Ethan… it wasn’t just a professional relationship.”
Leo looked genuinely puzzled. “But you guys are divorced. And look, no offense, but even if you still had feelings for him, he doesn’t see you that way. You aren’t a threat to him and Chloe. Why can’t she just see that?”
Mia went dead silent.
Leo,” she said, her voice flat. “Just focus on work.”
There was no point. Talking to him was like hitting a brick wall.
Leo nodded, moving on. “Right. Anyway, Ethan won’t be in the office today. It’ll just be the two of us for the linner meeting with the CEO of Darko Group tonight.”
Got it,” Mia replied, her eyes drifting toward Ethan’s closed office door.
Ever since Chloe Bennett came back, Ethan Hale blowing off work had become the new normal.
Bayview and Darko had been partners for years, and Ethan had always handled these meetings personally.
So when only Leo Martinez and Mia Carter showed up today, Gary White, the CEO of Darko Group, was clearly
pissed.
If Mr. Hale is too busy for me, we can just do this another day,” Gary snapped.
Leo immediately filled his glass to the brim. “Mr. Hale had a genuine last-minute emergency. He didn’t want to cancel and stall our progress, so he sent us. Please, Mr. White, let’s finish this dinner. I promise he’ll make it up to
you personally very soon.”
Gary’s expression softened slightly at the gesture. “It’s just the contract… there are a few points I wanted to dive deeper into.”
Mia didn’t skip a beat. She pulled the contract from her bag and laid it out. “Mr. White, any terms you want to weak or add, just tell me. I’ll take notes, run them by Ethan, and have a final answer for you by tomorrow morning.”
When it came to professional competence, Mia was untouchable. No one else even came close.
Even Leo felt like a total rookie next to her.
They had a system; Leo handled the social drinking, and Mia handled the business.
While the two men went shot for shot, Mia sat there composed in a crisp white button-down and loose black
trousers.
Her long hair was pulled back into a high ponytail, giving off an air of effortless, polished elegance.

Up on the second-floor balcony, Jaxon leaned his weight on the railing. He watched Mia, his interest clearly piqued.
“There’s something about Mia. She’s got this vibe… it’s captivating.”
Minu
Jaxon grinned at Ethan. “She’s been working for you for so long. Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed how and sharp she is?”
gorgeous
The light from the massive chandelier washed over Ethan. In his black suit, he looked colder and more detached than ever.
He shot Jaxon a sideways look. “Get to the point.”
“I heard Mia is quitting.” Jaxon turned around, leaning back against the railing with a smug grin.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. He pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and popped one between his lips.
He flicked the lighter. The flame flared in his eyes.
“Did you really call off the engagement with Chloe because of Mia?” Jaxon asked, looking intrigued. “What’s the play here? Keeping Mia around aren’t you afraid Chloe will lose it?”
Ethan blew a ring of smoke, his eyes locked on Mia.
“Cut the bullshit.”
He didn’t waste words. His sharp face was a blank mask, cold and unreadable.
