“You want her?” Ethan’s voice was low and dangerous. “Then come and get her. If you’ve got the balls.”
He turned on his heel and headed back toward the VIP lounge.
Jaxon let out a mocking laugh, trailing behind him. “What’s the matter, Ethan? Scared to call Mia up here and ask what she thinks?”
Ethan ignored him, stepping into the room. He pulled out a chair, sat down, and kicked his foot up onto the neighboring seat.
The move effectively blocked Jaxon from sitting anywhere near him.
She doesn’t get a choice,” Ethan snapped.
She was just a secretary who grew up in an orphanage. No matter how good she was at her job, she wasn’t in a position to choose between men like them.
axon took the hint and sat a chair away.
Damn, you’re cold. She’s been by your side for years, and she’s still just a pawn to you?” Jaxon leaned back, a smirk playing on his lips. “Is that why you’re keeping her? Just to get back at Chloe for dumping you and moving broad?”
This was the first time the two of them had faced off like this in private.
axon couldn’t shut his mouth. He was dancing on a razor’s edge, practically begging for a death sentence.
For once, Ethan didn’t snap. He just kept pouring the drinks.
You think you can outdrink me?” Jaxon stripped off his blazer and stood up, planting a foot on the chair. He olled up his sleeves and slammed back his drink.
axon was a pro. He’d basically been raised in a bar.
Ethan hit the clubs often enough for business, but no one ever dared to force a drink on him. There was no way he could keep up with a heavy hitter like Jaxon.
Bottoms up! Tonight, I’m winning Mia’s freedom. If I drink you under the table, you’re waiving the exit fees. You’ll have her at the Riverside entrance first thing tomorrow morning!”
axon refilled his own glass and then filled Ethan’s to the brim.
‘She doesn’t want to be at Bayview anymore, Ethan. You can’t force someone to stay. Since when did you become such a pathetic loser?”
One drink, one insult. He didn’t stop.
With every word Jaxon spoke, Ethan’s expression grew darker.
An hour later, Ethan was still in his seat. The only sign of the alcohol was the slight flush at the corners of his eyes.
He gripped a glass of amber liquid in his steady hand, tilting it toward Jaxon, who was now a wasted heap on the
floor.

Ethan leaned down and slapped Jaxon’s cheek. “Whether I’m keeping Mia around just to piss off Chloe or because she’s a useful pawn, she’s not yours to touch. Get that through your head and stay the hell away from her.” “Burp…” Jaxon let out a loud, drunken belch. His eyes were completely glazed over as he mumbled, “Ethan… you prick… you played me. You were holding back the whole time…”
11:30 PM. The dinner finally wrapped up. Mia headed to the parking lot to get the car.
She’d just hopped into the driver’s seat when she saw someone being carried out on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance.
Everyone at this place was either filthy rich or powerful. Seeing someone get trashed to the point of hospitalization was a major scandal, and the paparazzi were already on it.
Camera flashes went off like rapid fire, lighting up the night.
Amidst the chaotic crowd, Mia’s gaze locked onto a tall, commanding figure.
The man was walking out of the restaurant, heading toward the street.
Ethan?
The thought barely crossed her mind before she brushed it off.
He’d left tonight’s entire event to her and Leo. Why would he show up here now?
She started the engine, drove to the hotel entrance, and picked up Leo Martinez.
Was that Mr. Rivers just now?” Leo asked. He’d had a lot to drink, but he was still mostly sober.
Mia glanced at the ambulance in the rearview mirror as it sped away in the opposite direction.
Which Mr. Rivers?”
Leo spoke up. “Jaxon Rivers. That nepo baby really made a fool of himself tonight. He got so trashed at this place hey had to carry him out on a stretcher.”
Getting wasted at a club was one thing that was just being a playboy.
But blacking out at a business dinner? That just meant Jaxon was a lightweight who didn’t know his limits. Getting nauled off in an ambulance like that was the kind of scandal the elite circles would be laughing about for the next
year.
‘I just wonder who had the balls to outdrink him,” Leo muttered, still trying to wrap his head around it.
Mia just shook her head slowly. She didn’t know much about Riverside’s projects, let alone the kind of people Jaxon associated with.
By that night, the video of Jaxon being carried out of the hotel was already trending on X.
The paparazzi caught the Rivers family heading into the hospital later. Jaxon’s father looked like he wanted to kill
someone.
First thing the next morning, the Rivers family released a statement: Jaxon was “taking a medical leave” to recover and would be stepping away from company operations temporarily.
