Chapter 56

Mia had been weighing her options, wondering if she should reach out to Jaxon for help.

Now, she didn’t have to wonder. That door was slammed shut.

Mia spent the whole morning in a fog, her face pale and her mind heavy with worry,

‘Hey, Mia.”

Stella leaned over her desk while dropping off some files, her eyes bright with gossip. “Do you know why Zoe Parker got the boot?”

Mia snapped out of her thoughts and shook her head. “No idea.”

Zoe’s talking shit in the secretaries’ group chat,” Stella whispered. “She’s telling everyone you manipulated Ethan nto firing her. She’s even calling you a homewrecker, saying you’re the reason things went south between Ethan

and Chloe!”

stella didn’t believe a word of it. She had tried to call Zoe out right there in the chat.

But Zoe was the group admin, so she just kicked Stella out.

The thing is, everyone else in that group is part of Zoe’s little clique,” Stella continued, frustrated. “They believe

  1. Now they’re spreading those lies everywhere.”

Ever since the news broke that Ethan and Chloe’s engagement was off, the vibe at the office had shifted. People vere looking at Mia differently.

t had gotten worse over the last few days. Everywhere Mia went, she felt eyes on her, judging her, dissecting her

very move.

Now she knew why. Zoe was busy playing the victim and pulling strings behind her back.

I heard a rumor that you’re quitting,” Stella said, looking concerned. “Is it because of all this drama?”

stella grabbed Mia’s hand. “Don’t do it. It’s not worth it. Once you get a boyfriend or get married, these rumors vill just die down on their own. This job is such a huge opportunity…”

Dating? Marriage?

Those were things Mia hadn’t even let herself dream about.

3ut hearing Stella say the rumors would “die down on their own” made something click in her mind.

The whole quitting thing is… complicated,” Mia said softly. “Nothing is final yet. If I do decide to leave, I’ll tell you first. I promise.”

Stella looked even more frantic. “What am I supposed to do without you? Mia, please, can’t you just stay?”

She was acting like a desperate kid. Mia gave her a helpless smile. “Fine, fine. I’m not leaving yet.”

She said she wouldn’t leave yet, not that she was staying for good.

Since they were on the clock, Stella didn’t push it any further.

As long as she was still on the payroll, Mia’s schedule remained packed. There was no time to breathe.

Suddenly, an email notification popped up in the bottom right corner of her screen. It was from an unknown sender. The subject line was just two words: Ethan Hale.

Mia stopped what she was doing and clicked it open.

It was an audio file, just over a minute long. She grabbed her headphones, put them on, and hit play.

‘She doesn’t have the right to choose.”

Damn, Ethan. You really are heartless. She’s been by your side for so long, and she’s just a pawn to you? You’re ɔnly keeping her around to get back at Chloe for dumping you and moving abroad, aren’t you?”

Whether I’m keeping Mia around to piss off Chloe or just because she’s a convenient tool, she’s mine. She’s not someone you get to touch. Get that through your head.”

Mia recognized Ethan’s voice instantly. That cold, detached tone was unmistakable.

She had suspected it. She’d told herself that maybe she was just a tool he used to get under Chloe’s skin.

But until she heard it for herself, it had only been a possibility. A nightmare she hoped wasn’t true.

Now, the truth was laid bare. Mia felt the blood drain from her face, her entire body turning to ice. She sat there, paralyzed, unable to move or even think.

[wo years of marriage. Six years of devotion. And she didn’t hold a single ounce of importance in Ethan’s heart.

She was a prop to make Chloe jealous. She was a convenient pawn. She was nothing.

Mia’s breath hitched. A dull ache bloomed deep in her chest, sharp enough to drain every drop of color from her
