Chapter 57
Now that Jaxon has been kicked to the curb, he can’t afford your buyout fee. Which means you’re stuck here.
Her pretty little face really couldn’t hide a single thing.
Ethan’s jaw tightened as he pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek. He looked perfectly composed, but there was a storm brewing just beneath the surface.
‘I’m sure you’re worried sick about Jaxon. Why don’t you visit him on behalf of Bayview? Make it quick, though. I want you back before the eleven o’clock meeting.”
Mia suddenly realized something. Jaxon and Ethan had already met.
That recording it was their conversation.
It happened last night!
Well?” Ethan stood tall, hands shoved in his pockets, looming over her. “Having second thoughts, Mia?”
His tone was impossible to read. She couldn’t tell if he actually wanted her to go or if he was just baiting her.
She kept her head down, silent for a few seconds before nodding. “Fine. I’ll go now.”
She grabbed her coat and bag and walked out.
Ethan’s eyes darkened. He watched her walk away, his lips thinning into a tight, hard line.
Mia picked up some wellness gifts on the way. It was ten o’clock by the time she reached the hospital.
axon was on an IV when she found his room.
The door was slightly ajar. She pushed it open and stepped inside.
Her heels clicked sharply against the tile floor.
[axon was lounging in his hospital gown, hands tucked behind his head. He had his legs crossed, eyes shut, soaking ap the sun through the window.
‘Get out! I said no visitors! I’m fine, dammit. That bastard Ethan did this on purpose, making a scene just to dump me in here…”
Mia’s mouth twitched. She caught a glimpse of the chart hanging at the foot of the bed. It just said “Alcohol Detox.
After all the drama of him being rushed to the hospital, everyone assumed he had a ruptured ulcer at the very
least.
All that hype for nothing. He looked like a complete joke.
“Mr. Rivers.”
Mia set the gift baskets down on the nightstand.
Jaxon jumped, snapping his eyes open. “Holy shit! Ethan sent you here!?”
“Yes,” Mia nodded. “I’m here representing Bayview to see how you’re doing.”
“Bullshit!” Jaxon sat bolt upright, slamming his hand against the mattress. “He sent you here to rub it in my face!”

Mia stayed silent. Ethan had clearly achieved his goal.

Jaxon grabbed her arm and wouldn’t let go. “Did you listen to that recording I sent? Ethan is a total prick. He doesn’t give a damn about you. You’re stuck between him and Chloe, and you’re the one who’s going to get
screwed!”
‘Once they’re married, they’ll settle their fights in bed, and you’ll be the one left out in the cold with nothing!”
Mia listened quietly. Every word was a sharp blade, twisting deep in her chest.
Her heart was already shredded, full of holes.
Why aren’t you reacting?” Jaxon looked frustrated that she wasn’t as angry as he expected. “Don’t you think I’m right?”
Mia nodded. “You’re absolutely right.”
But what could she even do about it?
axon blurted out, “Then why the hell are you still at Bayview? Quit and come to Riverside. I’ll *
He stopped mid-sentence. It finally hit him he’d been stripped of his position.
Fuck!” Jaxon Rivers hissed, his jaw tight. “Ethan Hale is such a prick. He sent you here just to rub it in my face, lidn’t he?”
Trashing Ethan made Jaxon feel better, helping him vent his frustration.
But for Mia Carter, every wound Ethan inflicted was a direct hit to the heart.
The more she cursed him in her mind, the colder her heart grew.
She had to force herself to stay numb. It was the only way to shove the pain and the biting chill back down.
Take care of yourself, Mr. Rivers,” Mia said, her voice flat. “I won’t bother you anymore. I’m leaving.”
axon wasn’t done venting, but he suddenly realized he’d messed up. He was only making things harder for her.
‘I shouldn’t have confronted Ethan last night,” he muttered. “But don’t worry. The day I’m back at Riverside, I’m getting you away from him. I’m taking you back.”
Mia paused at the door, his words hanging in the air. She didn’t respond. She just kept walking.
11:00 AM. Mia made it back to the office right on time. She didn’t even have a chance to touch the stack of files on her desk before Ethan dragged her into an interview about the Bayview-Bennett partnership.
