On the other side of the room, Cindy was sitting in her high chair eating her cake. She had frosting on her mouth, but her eyes were sparkling with delight.

Suddenly, she put down her little spoon, got up, and walked over to Helena.

Once she was close, she looked up with those big, teary doe eyes and threw her arms around Helena.

"Grandma Helena."

"Yes?" Helena smiled, grabbing a tissue to bend down and gently wipe the corner of the little girl's mouth.

"Can you be Mommy's mommy?"

The dining room fell completely silent.

Virginia was the first to snap out of it. She reached out to pull Cindy back. "Cindy, don't say silly things, come back to Mommy..."

Cindy's bottom lip quivered as she shrank back into Helena's embrace, her big, glossy eyes welling up with fresh tears.

"No. Grandma Helena, my other grandma is mean... she hit Mommy..."

The little girl sobbed, her voice breaking.

"Grandma Helena is nicer than my other grandma... you don't hit Mommy, and you make me cake..."

By the time she reached the last few words, the little girl let out a tearful hiccup, and the tears came spilling down.

Virginia was utterly speechless.

Helena's smile faded.

She shot Virginia a glance but didn't ask a single question. Instead, she leaned down, scooped Cindy up into her arms, and gently wiped the tears from her little cheeks with the tissue.

"Silly girl." She hugged the child tenderly, her voice warm but filled with absolute conviction. "I will always be your mommy's mommy."

"Always."

Even after Virginia and Archer divorced, she had never once considered Virginia an outsider.

Virginia kept her head down, her thick lashes trembling uncontrollably.

She bit her bottom lip hard, her throat blocked tight.

A second later, a single tear crashed onto the table.

She quickly raised her hand to swipe at the corner of her eye, then picked up her bowl and continued drinking her soup, pretending nothing had happened.
