"You said you wanted to speak with Mr Louis Carrington?"
My eyes widened in shock.
This was Louis’ personal phone why was this person answering it? And a woman no less.
"I’m sorry, but who are you?" That was all I could bring myself to ask.
"Leigh-anne Sommers, his assistant," she told me, she sounded young and well-spoken.
A shiver ran down my spine. His assistant? Louis had a new assistant already. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised it had been two weeks already with no contact from me. Louis didn’t have a lot to work with so I couldn’t blame him but still...
"Ah, yes, I would like to speak with Mr Carrington," I replied.
"He’s in the middle of an important meeting right now and left his phone," she told me. "I answered to let you know this and call back later." She replied in a sweet voice.
My eyebrows scrunched up in suspicion. It still wasn’t her phone, so she had no business answering his personal calls. And anyway, I can’t call later. If he wasn’t available now, I wouldn’t be able to call back. I couldn’t believe this call had amounted to nothing. Now I wish I had tried to ask a colleague for one of the employees’ phones and sent a message through them; I couldn’t message using a telephone.
"Do you know when he’ll be done?" I asked.
"I can’t say ma’am," she told me.
Then suddenly I realised where I recognised the voice from. That time when we went to the Carrington group HQ. The woman I had bumped into with the folders. Louis’ wife from my previous life.
Goosebumps ran down my arms as I realised this. There was no way. But their voices sounded so similar.
You’re telling me out of all the people that could have been Louis’s new assistant, his former wife was the one chosen. Fate had a funny way of working, didn’t it?
Then suddenly the door to the office was tried. My eyes averted to it, and I saw the handle go up and down. Shit, I thought to myself. I had been found out. How long had it been?
It couldn’t have been more than 20 minutes since the time I got off the elevator. They were fast. I mean, there were cameras around the building. I shouldn’t be surprised.
I saw a figure outside the door. I saw the outline of shoes from underneath the door. I could also see the outline of several other figures standing outside the office walls through the covered blinds.
I continued to hold the phone to my ear.
"The door’s locked," I heard a voice say.
Moments later, the door handle started again. This time with more force and vigour. Time was almost up. "Mrs Acland, open up! We know you are inside!" I heard the voice say. That confirmed they knew I was inside.

Now I wouldn’t be able to, and after this little stunt, I wasn’t sure if I would get another chance. Knowing Keith, I knew he was going to put even tighter restrictions on me. If I could have heard Louis’ voice or spoken to him, it would have made the restrictions all worth it. Meanwhile, Louis was going to be working with his former wife...
