Chapter 40 I Almost Set You Up With Adriel

Joanne stayed with her the whole time.

night.
Adriel knew it wasn’t proper for a man to take care of Wynette alone. In the end, he agreed to let Joanne
stay.
The next morning, Wynette insisted on getting discharged. Joanne helped her check out.

On the way home, Joanne suddenly frowned, like something finally clicked. “Wait a second,” she said, shocked. “Why was my brother the one running around for you? Weren’t you two always at odds? You could barely stand each other.”
She had felt something was off last night. She just couldn’t figure it out until now.
Joanne narrowed her eyes and stared at Wynette. “You better come clean. When did you and my brother start having an affair?”
The way she said it almost made Wynette choke on her own spit.
Coughing, face red, Wynette shot her a look. “What kind of question is that? Aren’t you afraid your brother will hear you and lose it?”
Joanne stuck out her tongue. “Don’t change the subject. Tell me, how did you get friendly with that giant iceberg? Last I remember, you two couldn’t stand each other.”
Did she remember it wrong?
She started to question her memory.
Wynette cleared her throat and avoided her gaze. “Funny enough, the place Lorelei picked for dinner happened to be your family’s. And when I had an allergic reaction and passed out, your brother was there. He saw everything and rushed me to the hospital.
“Mr. Gallagher figured if he was helping, he might as well see it through. So he stayed with me the whole time. Honestly, I should thank him for saving my life.”
Joanne listened to Wynette and finally felt things make sense.
She looked at her and said, “My brother really isn’t as cold as people think. He just doesn’t smile much. In business, if you’re not firm and decisive, you won’t survive.”
Because of his cold and sharp personality and no–nonsense style, people in the business world gave Adriel a harsh nickname, Hades.
Occasionally, Joanne felt it was unfair to him.
But no matter what she said, it didn’t change anything. To outsiders, she was just his sister. Of course she would defend him.

There was no way to explain it clearly.

But as long as she could remember, Wynette had always avoided Adriel. Joanne never knew why.
Weren’t Wynette, Noah, and Adriel supposed to have grown up together?
She was actually quite curious about how they had grown apart later on.
Joanne had asked Adriel before, but he told her not to dig into it. He also told her not to distance herself from Wynette because of it. “Just keep hanging out like usual,” he said.
That was why Joanne and Wynette were still so close now.
Wynette’s face turned red again at Joanne’s words.
If she told Joanne that she didn’t need an introduction–because she was going to marry Adriel in a few days -Joanne would probably be even more shocked.
Wynette stared at Joanne, wanting to tell her the truth. But the words just wouldn’t come out.
After thinking it over, she gave up.

But she bought hers later, and it was far from Adriel’s place.
Back then, Adriel never said which part of the neighborhood he lived in, so Joanne still didn’t know.
“Which area?” Joanne asked.
“Maplevale,” Wynette replied.
Joanne made an “OK” sign.
Then she complained, “I’m in Rosevale. Maplevale is so far from me. It would take about an hour to walk. I was hoping we’d be close so I could come see you when I need a break.”
It looked like that hope was gone.
Wynette smiled. “Don’t you have a scooter at home? You could just ride over.”
It was kind of funny.
Joanne got that scooter last month while walking past a store anniversary event. She entered the lucky draw and unexpectedly won the grand prize.
Twice.
So just like that, she ended up with two identical scooters in different colors.
She called Wynette at once. Feeling generous, she gave her the mint green one and even named it “Pea.”
She kept the pink one for herself and called it “Pinky.”
Right now, that scooter was still sitting in her parking lot, looking completely out of place.
It hadn’t even been used once.
Hearing Wynette’s suggestion, Joanne was enlightened. “Hey, that’s actually a great idea.”
She immediately called the driver, sent him the address, and told him to bring the scooter over sometime in the next couple of days.
