Chapter 7 I Will Be Here If You Need Me

As soon as Wynette returned to her bedroom, her phone exploded with messages from Kaylee.

“Wynette, do you really have to be this stubborn? Are you really going to abandon us? Your dad’s family built this company over generations. Can you really watch a hundred years of the Jewells’s work collapse like this?”

“If that happens, how am I supposed to explain this to the family?”

“I know you’ve been wronged in this. But Lorelei is the woman Noah can’t forget. Can’t you just endure it?”

“There are plenty of men who fool around outside. If you can’t have love, then at least hold on to the money.

“Wynette, I’m begging you. Your dad is still in the hospital. If Jewell Group really collapses, I don’t know how I’ll face him or the rest of the family.”

Wynette stared at the wall of messages on her screen. Her face showed no emotion.

She understood the helplessness and pleading behind Kaylee’s words.

Each message felt like a blade stabbing into her chest.

After staring at the phone for a while, Wynette simply locked the screen.

She had no mood to talk about this right now.

The truth was the Jewells still had too many business ties with the Shepherds. It wouldn’t be easy to separate everything overnight.

Right now, the only thing she could do was split the business between the two companies as quickly and cleanly as possible.

With that thought, Wynette found her assistant’s number and was about to call.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

She glanced at the screen. It was a number she knew well.

Adriel.

She hadn’t saved his contact, but he had called her several times before. Over time, she memorized the number.

She answered. “Wynette.” Adriel’s deep voice came from the other end.

For some reason, every time he said her name, she felt a strange softness in his tone.

Wynette quickly pushed the thought away. “Yes,” she replied quietly.

She didn’t know why he was calling, but it definitely wasn’t for fun.

So she waited for him to speak first.

Adriel didn’t keep her waiting. “If you need help, you can come to me.”

At first, Wynette didn’t understand what he meant.

Then it suddenly clicked. “You…”

She didn’t expect that Adriel, even while on a business trip, would hear about it so quickly.

He must have heard about the conflict between the Jewells and the Shepherds. That was why he called.

His meaning was clear. If Wynette asked, he would step in and help the Jewells.

For the Jewells, that would be exactly the help they needed right now.

But…

Wynette hesitated.

Years ago, when the Jewells suffered a huge blow, the Shepherds stepped in to help. Back then, the Shepherds were their only lifeline.

With the Shepherds’s support, the Jewells managed to survive.

But after that, they were always restrained by the Shepherds.

She had her worries.

If Adriel stepped in, the Jewells could break free from the Shepherds.

But that wasn’t what Wynette wanted.

If they replaced the Shepherds with the powerful Gallaghers, the result would be the same.

Nothing would really change.

They would still depend on someone else.

The Jewells would still have no real control over its own future.

Now that they finally had a chance to break free from the Shepherds, Wynette didn’t want the

Even if she weren’t sure whether she could handle that burden.

What happened with Noah had already taught her a lesson.

Mountains fall. People leave. At the end of the day, the only one you can count on is yourself.

After thinking it through, Wynette refused politely. “It’s okay. I can handle it myself. Thank you for the offer, Mr. Gallagher.”

After she finished speaking, a soft chuckle came from the other side. “Alright. I’ll be here if you need me. You can come to me anytime.”

Even though she refused, Adriel still left the offer open.

Wynette pressed her lips together. After a while, she quietly said, “Thank you.”

The conversation stopped. Silence filled the space between them.

In the end, Adriel broke it first.

He cleared his throat. “About the wedding… do you have any requests?”

Even though he gave Wynette a week to decide whether she wanted to register their marriage with him, Adriel never meant to just get the license and leave it at that.

If they were getting the license, then the wedding had to be planned as well.

Wynette froze for a moment. A wedding with Adriel?

She had never even imagined it.

Even when she planned to marry Noah, the Shepherds never planned to hold a wedding.

Back then, Noah said weddings were too tiring. He preferred a travel wedding instead.

Wynette didn’t think much of it at the time. She thought he just didn’t like trouble.

But now that she thought about it, maybe Noah simply didn’t want Lorelei to know about their marriage.

Or maybe he never planned to truly marry her at all.

Wynette let out a quiet, mocking smile.

She pushed the thought away and answered, “I don’t really have any ideas. Honestly, it’s fine if
