Although the cafeteria wasn't packed, it wasn't empty either.
Marcus's presence had already drawn plenty of stares.
Their relationship was no secret.
Ex-sister-in-law and former brother-in-law.
A dynamic like that was bound to turn heads and fuel gossip no matter the occasion.
What's more, anyone with eyes could tell Lyra was anything but thrilled to see him.
"Do we really have anything to discuss?"
Lyra's lips curled into a mocking smile.
She had no idea what he was plotting yet.
But she was absolutely certain that his frequent, uninvited attention meant nothing good.
Marcus opened his mouth to reply, his eyes sweeping the room. Noticing the lingering gazes, he pivoted. "This isn't the best place to talk. How about we go somewhere else?"
Lyra was about to refuse, but he beat her to it.
"Everyone's watching. Even if you turn me down, you shouldn't turn down the Sterling family, right?"
It was a thinly veiled threat.
Obviously, Lyra wasn't buying it.
"That's your problem. It has nothing to do with me."
With that, she turned and headed for the door.
Her reaction seemed exactly what Marcus had expected. He stayed rooted to his spot, chuckled softly, and then followed her out.
