"My grandmother passed away early, so I never met her. My parents..." Jorrod paused. "My Uncle Theron's marriage ended in a bitter divorce after just a few years, and it was the same for my aunt. You could say that out of three generations in my family, you couldn't scrape together a single functional couple."
The man's large hand turned over, firmly grasping her soft fingers in his palm.
"Sienna, this is the first New Year I can remember that actually felt like being part of a family."
Sienna stared at him quietly.
She didn't know what to say to comfort him in this moment, so she simply cupped his face, leaned forward, and planted a soft kiss on his lips.
...
Later, Sienna asked him, "So what did it feel like to get your memories back? Did it feel... disjointed?"
Jorrod thought for a moment. "Not exactly. But back when I was secretly looking through my phone trying to piece things together, I felt guilty, like I was stealing someone else's memories."
Back then, he had tried desperately to superimpose all those trivial details onto himself, fighting to feel a connection, only to realize he couldn't do it at all. From start to finish, it felt like he was just watching someone else's love story.
There was an insurmountable distance between him and those events that had actually happened.
"Now, those past events and shared experiences truly exist in my mind. I remember all your joys and sorrows. Those memories are something we built together."
In other words.
"I recovered my complete love for you."
-
After the New Year passed.
George and Lillian didn't linger, leaving the remaining time for the young couple.
When it was time to leave, Jorrod booked their flights, and the car returned exactly the way it had come.
George insisted that taking the car back and forth was too much trouble and suggested leaving it parked in the south.
