**When Night Grows Softer Hope Returns To Lead Us by Asa Rowan Finn**
**Chapter 128**
Talya’s fingers curled tightly around the steering wheel, her heart racing as she maneuvered past another vehicle. “Come on, hurry,” she murmured to herself, a whisper barely escaping her lips. With a quick flick of her gaze, she looked into the rearview mirror. The dark SUV loomed ominously close behind her, its headlights glaring like a predator stalking its prey. She pressed the accelerator, feeling the car surge forward, but the SUV matched her speed, unwavering. Panic surged within her as she glanced back again, just in time to see the SUV lurch forward, closing the distance. “I think it’s going to hit me!” she screamed, her voice echoing in the confined space of the car.
“There’s no police for miles! Just floor it!” Kyle’s voice crackled through the phone, urgent and commanding. Talya obeyed instinctively, pressing the gas pedal down to the floor with a determination fueled by fear. The engine roared to life, and her car surged ahead. She gripped the wheel so tightly her knuckles turned a ghostly white.
“Have you ever driven this fast before?” Kyle’s voice, calm yet insistent, broke through her frantic thoughts.
“No!” Talya gasped, her breath hitching in her throat.
“Alright, stay calm. You need to keep your cool. If you tense up, you’ll jerk the wheel, and Liam’s car is highly responsive. Focus on where you want to go, not the speedometer or anything else. Just look ahead. I’m going to try to get Liam on the line, okay?”
Talya didn’t respond; her mind was racing, consumed by the need to survive. She risked another glance in the rearview mirror. The SUV was still right on her tail, relentless. She turned her focus back to the road, weaving around another car with a sense of urgency. Thankfully, the traffic was sparse, but the speed was terrifying. She fought to keep her movements steady, aware that even the slightest miscalculation could send her spiraling out of control. A sudden jolt made her scream when she felt a hard tap on her bumper.
“What just happened?” Kyle’s voice was sharp with concern.
“They hit me!” Talya cried, her heart pounding. Though she had managed to keep the car steady, the impact had startled her to the core.
Kyle cursed under his breath, and there was a brief moment of silence before she heard the ringing sound of a phone connecting. “Kyle,” a man’s voice said.
“Put Liam on,” Kyle instructed, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Moments later, Liam’s voice came through, filled with urgency. “Kyle, what’s going on?”
“They found Talya,” Kyle replied, his voice tense. A curse slipped from Liam’s lips, loud enough to make Talya flinch. “She’s on the line. I’m guiding her.”
“Talya?” Liam’s voice was a lifeline amidst the chaos.
“I’m here,” she managed to say, but before she could catch her breath, the car was slammed into again, this time with greater force. She screamed as the vehicle swerved, her instincts kicking in just in time to regain control. The sounds of Liam and Kyle shouting filled her ears, but all she could think about was the overwhelming fear that threatened to consume her. “I can’t do this!” she shouted over their voices. “I can’t keep control at this speed! I don’t know what to do!” Desperation clawed at her.
“Talya, listen to me,” Liam’s voice cut through the noise, steady and reassuring. “Take a deep breath. You can handle this. Just focus on keeping the car steady. Stay calm. You need to evade them until I can reach you. Can you do that?”
Talya couldn’t respond; the weight of fear had rendered her speechless. “Talya, talk to me,” he urged, his voice firm.
