**When Night Grows Softer Hope Returns To Lead Us by Asa Rowan Finn**
**Chapter 132**
“Absolutely! She mentioned it was a blessing, especially since she was gearing up to contact the police,” Grandma chuckled, her laughter ringing with warmth. Talya couldn’t help but smile at the thought of Sage, her unwavering friend.
As they continued to chat, Talya felt a wave of comfort wash over her. Listening to their voices, filled with familiarity and care, was a soothing balm to her spirit. “Talya, you focus on getting better and coming back home, alright?” Grandma’s voice was firm yet tender, a reminder of the love that surrounded her.
“I will, Grandma,” Talya replied, her heart swelling with affection. “I love you both so much.”
“We love you too,” Grandma responded, her voice laced with sincerity. “We’ve taken care of everything at school for you. All your teachers are supposed to start sending you emails with your assignments. And Sage? She gathered all your books and sent them your way.”
A rush of gratitude enveloped Talya as she thought of her friend’s kindness. Their conversation lingered a few moments longer, but fatigue began to creep in. “I’ll probably call again soon, probably from this number. I lost my phone in the accident,” she said, her voice trailing off. They exchanged warm goodbyes, and as Talya hung up the phone, a small smile played on her lips. She placed the device gently on the table beside her, ensuring it was within reach for Liam when he returned. Leaning back against her pillow, she inhaled deeply, feeling the weight of her earlier emotions lift slightly. She had already indulged in a complete meltdown and a pity party; now it was time to gather her strength and focus on healing. The danger had been addressed; all she needed to do was recover, and then she could reclaim her life. It was a solid plan, one that brought a flicker of hope. Her eyelids grew heavy, succumbing to the pull of sleep once more.
When Talya eventually stirred, she noticed Liam absorbed in his laptop, the glow of the screen illuminating his intense expression. “You don’t have to stay here all the time, you know. I’m aware you have your own life,” she said, her voice soft but insistent.
His striking blue eyes met hers, and she felt a flutter of something—was it vulnerability? “I’m fine,” he replied, closing the laptop with a decisive snap. “What can I get for you?”
“What did you tell my grandparents?” she asked, her curiosity piqued.
“I told them the truth, more or less. I explained that you borrowed my car and ended up in a serious accident. They needed to know you were getting specialized care, so I mentioned we took you to Wisconsin, to a trauma center,” he said, his tone unapologetic yet sincere.
“But I can go home now, right? You handled everything with them, didn’t you?” Talya pressed, unable to voice the word ‘vampires’ that lingered in her mind. She still grappled with the reality of that whole situation, even as she believed wholeheartedly that there were threats lurking around her.
Liam shook his head, his expression grave. “No, I’m afraid not. Not until we understand why they are pursuing you. They could send more after you, and I can’t risk your grandparents’ safety.”
A sigh of frustration escaped Talya’s lips. “You’re sure they’re safe, right?”
“Absolutely. We have two men keeping watch over them, rotating every twenty-four hours,” he assured her, though the knot of worry in her stomach remained.
“Is it possible for me to get a shower?” she asked, a hint of desperation creeping into her voice.
Liam hesitated, his brow furrowing. “Let’s check with Paul,” he suggested. Their wait was brief; Paul entered the room moments later.
“Talya, do you want a shower?” he inquired, his expression neutral.
Talya frowned, taken aback. How did he know? But she nodded, the desire for cleanliness overwhelming her. “Yes, I do.”
“It might be tricky, but we can certainly try,” Paul said, his tone pragmatic. “The toughest part will be keeping both casts dry over the next few weeks.”
