**When Night Grows Softer Hope Returns To Lead Us by Asa Rowan Finn – Chapter 131**
“She needs to rest,” Talya heard Liam’s voice, a gentle murmur that seemed to float in and out of her consciousness. Yet, the weight of her eyelids felt insurmountable, and she struggled to keep them open. She could feel the warmth of his hand as it brushed against her cheek, a tender gesture that sent a wave of comfort through her. “Don’t fight it, Talya. Just let your body rest. I’ll be right here when you wake up.”
A part of her wanted to urge him to leave, to go home and take care of himself, but the words remained trapped in her throat, refusing to form. Instead, she surrendered to the darkness, allowing sleep to envelop her like a soft blanket.
As time passed, the moments when Talya opened her eyes became a familiar rhythm. Each time, she found Liam by her side, his presence a constant anchor in her hazy reality. He would talk to her, his voice a soothing balm, weaving stories and sharing snippets of his day, but before long, sleep would claim her once more. A small but encouraging sign was that each awakening lasted a little longer than the last.
Finally, she blinked awake, a sense of clarity washing over her. This time, it felt different; the heaviness that had clouded her mind was lifting. She glanced around and realized that she was no longer tethered to the machines that had monitored her every heartbeat. Relief flooded through her. Turning her head slightly, she spotted Liam in his usual chair, his eyes lighting up the moment he noticed her alertness. “Hey,” he said softly, a smile breaking across his face.
Talya felt a strange sensation in her mouth as she tentatively tried to speak. “Hey,” she croaked, her voice raspy and foreign to her ears. Liam quickly reached for a cup filled with water, a straw poised for her.
“Here, try some of this,” he encouraged, holding it to her lips.
She took a long, desperate sip, feeling the cool liquid soothe her parched throat. It was as if she had been wandering through a desert, and now she was finally quenching her thirst. When the cup was empty, he refilled it without hesitation. “You look better; there’s more color in your face,” he observed, his eyes searching hers. “How are you feeling?”
“Better than I did every other time I woke up,” Talya admitted, her voice still thick and scratchy, but there was a flicker of hope in her heart.
Liam nodded, a look of relief washing over him. “That’s great to hear. Paul says your body is healing.”
With a surge of determination, Talya seized the moment to express what had been weighing on her mind since the accident. “Liam, I am so sorry about your car,” she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper.
He blinked in surprise, the sincerity of her apology clearly catching him off guard. “There’s nothing to be sorry for,” he replied firmly.
“But I destroyed it,” she protested weakly, guilt gnawing at her.
“It’s just a car,” he reassured her, his eyes unwavering. “You’re far more important to me than any vehicle. Cars can be replaced; you can’t,” he said, his sincerity wrapping around her like a protective shield.
In that moment, Talya felt a tumult of emotions bubbling within her—should she blush or cry? The intensity of it all overwhelmed her, and she felt the warm tears begin to trace paths down her cheeks.
Liam’s expression shifted to concern. “What is it, Talya? Where do you hurt?” he asked, his voice laced with worry.
But she couldn’t muster a response. The reality of her situation crashed over her like a wave, and the weight of it felt too heavy to bear. She was miles away from home, trapped in a body that felt foreign and painful, and the thought of facing it all was unbearable. “Talya?” Liam pressed again, his voice filled with urgency.
The door swung open, and Paul stepped inside, his demeanor serious. “Help her,” Liam demanded, his protective instincts kicking in.
Paul approached her bedside, his expression softening. “Talya, are you in pain? I can increase your pain medication,” he offered, his voice steady and calm.
“I just,” Talya choked out, the words tumbling out in a rush. “I just want to g-go home,” she admitted, her heart breaking as the tears streamed down her cheeks. She turned her head away from the men, feeling the weight of their concern pressing down on her. They were talking, murmuring to each other, but she couldn’t focus on their words. A few moments later, she felt the bed shift as Liam settled next to her once more.
“Talya,” he said gently, his voice a soothing balm.
“Please, I just want to be alone,” she replied, her tone pleading.
