**When Night Grows Softer Hope Returns To Lead Us by Asa Rowan Finn**
**Chapter 156**
“Good and evil have been out of balance for far too long. The scales have tipped in favor of darkness, and I could no longer remain passive. The vampires have been gaining ground for generations, and I can’t just sit idly by, hoping my wolves will rise to their true potential. They require a catalyst, a guiding force to steer them back towards their purpose. That’s precisely why I brought you and Emma into existence,” the wolf articulated, its voice resonating with a weighty conviction.
Talya furrowed her brow, puzzled yet intrigued. “What exactly are we?” she inquired, her curiosity piqued.
The wolf’s gaze bore into her, a mixture of pride and solemnity. “You are composed of my wolf energy, yet you are not wolves in the truest sense. You lack the wolf spirit within you. This distinction is why the wolves are drawn to you, and why the vampires seek to eliminate you. They sense my essence in you, and I am their sworn enemy.”
Talya’s mind raced as she processed this revelation. “Well, when you put it that way…” she murmured, shaking her head in disbelief. The wolf’s explanation left her with more questions than answers, but it was enough to linger in her thoughts, casting a shadow over her mind. She pushed those swirling thoughts aside for the moment, redirecting her focus toward the melding she needed to find. She wandered for what felt like an eternity, the weight of uncertainty heavy on her shoulders.
Suddenly, a voice sliced through the silence, sending a jolt of fear through her. “What are you doing in my realm?” it demanded, echoing ominously from behind her. Talya spun around, her heart racing as she let out a startled shriek. Before her stood a tall figure with skin so pale it seemed almost ethereal. Instantly, she recognized him as a vampire, but not just any vampire; he was the leader of their kind. The power radiating from him was akin to that of the wolf in its own realm, a palpable force that made her skin crawl.
Why hadn’t she anticipated that the vampire leader would be here? The thought gnawed at her as she mentally prepared herself for the confrontation she would inevitably have with the wolf upon her return to the wolf realm… if she made it back at all.
The vampire inhaled deeply, his gaze piercing. “I know what you are. Word of you has reached my ears,” he said, stepping closer, each movement deliberate and calculated. Talya instinctively took a step back, her mind racing as she wished she were nearer to the dividing line, desperate to retreat into the safety of the wolf realm. But then she made the mistake of locking eyes with him. His irises were the deepest black she had ever encountered, devoid of life and warmth, and she quickly averted her gaze, feeling a shiver run down her spine.
She spotted a thick cream line, deciding it was a safer choice than starting with black, which she feared would lead her into the abyss. Steeling herself, she planted her feet firmly, inhaled deeply, and bent down to grasp the cord in her hands. Instantly, she was swept into a dream. The experience was disorienting, but Talya sensed that she was extracting the essence of what she needed. Pride.
Without hesitation, she followed that first dream with two more, each one equally perplexing, yet she endeavored to capture every detail. Unfortunately, none of the dreams provided any concrete assistance for her task.
“Did you find what you were looking for?” the vampire’s icy voice cut through the air behind her, sending a chill down her spine. Ignoring him, Talya began her trek back toward the wolf realm, acutely aware of the vampire shadowing her every step. He remained silent, but she could feel his presence, a looming threat that urged her to move faster. With each step, she pushed forward, her heart racing, hoping to reach the safety of the wolf realm.
Then, in an instant that felt surreal, one moment she was in the vampire realm, and the next, she was back in the wolf realm. She glanced over her shoulder, but the vampire realm had vanished from sight. Not willing to take any chances, she continued to put distance between herself and the dividing line, her heart still racing as the wolf moved alongside her, ready to face whatever awaited them next.
