Chapter 143
My hand loosened, the whip falling to the ground with a ‘snap. My legs gave way, and darkness swallowed me
“Seren!”
Calista’s cry was followed by Lucian’s quick movement. Ignoring the pain shooting through his back, his long arms caught me before I hit the floor, his strong arms pulling me close.
He lifted me easily. My wolf stirred, a low whine escaping as I felt his touch, his strength, a strength that usually comforted me, now feld tainted with the sting of his betrayal.
His brow furrowed slightly as he carried me.
He looked concerned.
He weighed me in his arms.
Had I gotten lighter?
He ignored the blood streaming down his back as he carried me to his bedroom, gently placing me on the bed. Calista had already sent Nathaniel.
Nathaniel arrived swiftly.”Mr. Silvermane, please sit. I’ll tend to your wounds.”
The first thing he saw was Lucian’s blood-soaked shirt.
Nathaniel’s eyes held worry, and his steps were quick as he came to my
side.
Lucian moved aside, revealing me.
“Check her first.” Lucian’s voice was low. He gestured for Nathaniel to examine me.
Nathaniel, despite his concern for Lucian, examined me carefully.
“Ms. Seren fainted from arrhythmia; her body hasn’t fully recovered. But the main reason is significant emotional distress.”
Calista’s face paled at the mention of arrhythmia.
She remembered the doctors at the Pack’s infirmary – I’d almost died from shock.
She raised her cane, striking Lucian’s leg, not his back.
“It’s all your fault! This cursed troublemaker! Bewitched by Ayla! You locked Seren up, almost killing her!”
Lucian visibly flinched at the words “almost killing her.”
‘My wolf stirred, a low growl rumbling in my chest.
He felt some remorse but instinctively defended Ayla.”Grandma, it wasn’t Ayla’s fault.”
“You!” Calista sputtered, her breath catching.
Lucian calmly indicated that a servant help her rest.
“Grandma, you didn’t want Seren to wake and worry about you, did you?”
His words hit her soft spot.
She snorted, glared, and stormed out.
Alone in the bedroom, Lucian carelessly removed his shirt. His back was a horrifying sight – crisscrossed whip marks, far worse than Calista’s previous punishments.
The old wounds were reopened and overlapped with the new ones, an appalling sight.
Nathaniel tended to his wounds swiftly. Lucian’s expression remained unchanged. His wolf felt a pang of guilt.
He’d taken my anger, my lashing out, all of it. Sitting in the armchair, my gaze lingered on me.
After treating Lucian’s wounds, Nathaniel prepared to change the dressing on my finger.
