Chloe sat perfectly straight in her seat.
Taking a deep breath, she turned and offered Sienna a practiced smile.
The curve of her lips and the crinkle of her eyes were mathematically flawless.
"Dr. Sterling," she said, striving for an effortless, breezy tone. "What do you think of the show so far?"
Sienna finally turned her head and gave her a cool, indifferent look.
"It's fine," she said.
A second later, she looked back at the stage.
Chloe sat there, her smile still plastered on, but it had turned brittle.
She suddenly felt like an absolute clown.
Refusing to give up, she pressed on:
"You really should think about settling down, Dr. Sterling. Take my husband, for instance. He absolutely dotes on me and our son..."
Sienna raised a hand, pressing her index finger lightly to her lips.
It was a careless gesture, like hushing a noisy toddler.
"Ms. Cross," she said softly, her voice carrying just enough for the two of them. "Please show some basic theater etiquette and respect the actors."
She paused.
"You're disturbing the people around you."
Chloe's fake smile shattered completely.
By the time Finn returned, the play was nearly over.
He handed the water to Chloe, who snatched it and slammed it down onto the armrest.
York was getting restless, squirming in his seat, leaning over the backrest one second and ducking under the chair the next.
"York, sit still," Chloe hissed.
Ignoring her, York slid out of his chair, scampered into the aisle, and ran back.
On his final lap, he snatched the bottle of water. The cap wasn't screwed on tight, and he sloshed it around as he ran...
Splashing it directly onto Sienna.
A dark stain bloomed across her navy-blue dress.
York froze, the bottle still clutched in his hand.
"Pretty lady... I'm sorry..."
The moment the words left his mouth, the house lights flipped on.
The show was over.
The audience stood up, the clatter of folding seats echoing through the theater as the crowd shuffled toward the exits.
Sienna glanced down at the water stain on her dress and took a deep breath.
She stood up to leave.
"Sienna."
