I Stopped Loving Him When He Let Me Bleed Out novel Chapter 35

The nurse at the station finally snapped her head up, eyes wide and jaw slacked.

The intern clutched the clipboard, completely rooted to the spot.

Down the hall, two passing nurses slowed their pace, exchanging a thrilled look.

Zachary's expression warped with fury.

His face cycled from pale to crimson, his lips trembling.

"You—!"

"Furthermore," she interrupted, her voice dropping, as precise and lethal as a scalpel. "You claim I can't reach Director Holloway's 'level.' First off, he's my boss. I respect him for his incredible skill and character, not his bank account. Though I suspect concepts like skill and character are completely foreign to you."

She paused.

"Secondly, your obsessive ranting about social status is just a pathetic defense mechanism. You can't handle a bruised ego, so you use it to soothe your fragile insecurities.

"It saves you from facing the brutal reality: you just don't measure up."

Zachary went paper-white, lifting a shaking finger at Sienna in a blind rage.

"Sienna Sterling, stop twisting the facts! You know exactly what kind of background you come from!"

"My background?" Sienna challenged. "My parents were hardworking employees from a small town. They lived honest lives, never taking a dime they didn't earn. I got into med school on my own merit, finished my residency abroad through my own hard work, and earned my spot at St. Jude's. Every dollar in my account is mine, and every step I've taken was on my own two feet. So you tell me—what exactly is wrong with my background?"

Two slow, loud claps echoed down the silent hallway.

Everyone turned to see Penny Sawyer.

Penny was beaming, having applauded purely on reflex.

Realizing what she had done, she slapped a hand over her mouth and ducked behind the counter, only her sparkling eyes visible.

The other nurse nudged her with an elbow, though she was struggling to hide her own smirk.

The two nurses down the hall straightened up, thoroughly satisfied by the takedown.

Zachary's mouth opened and closed, but no words came out.

Sienna grabbed her cup and walked right past him.

After two steps, she paused, though she didn't look back.
