She paused for a second, her voice dropping lower, each word ringing with unshakable resolve.
"If you cannot arrange a phone call, I will personally go to Global Air headquarters and submit a formal written request. I will go through the official channels, through whatever procedures are necessary. I have no intention of interfering with the mission. I just want one phone call."
The other end of the line fell silent for a few seconds, as if they hadn't expected her to be so uncompromising.
After a moment, the voice spoke again.
"Ms. Sterling, I will report this to my superiors immediately. I will contact you the moment we have an answer."
"Three days. I want an answer in three days at the latest." Sienna's tone left absolutely no room for negotiation.
"Understood, Ms. Sterling. We will give you a reply as soon as possible."
After hanging up, Sienna stood in the center of the living room, her heart hammering against her ribs, heavy and fast, feeling as though it might jump right out of her throat.
Her breathing grew shallow, a suffocating tightness building in her chest as if a heavy weight were pressing down on her, impossible to swallow and impossible to exhale.
She pushed open the balcony door and stepped outside. The night breeze hit her face, a cool draft slipping down her collar.
She took a deep breath, and then another, until that suffocating pressure finally began to disperse.
Sienna leaned against the railing for a while, looking up at the ink-black night sky above.
The moon was mostly hidden behind thick clouds, leaving only a faint sliver of light.
She remembered the last time she saw Finn, the day she dropped him off at the airport. He had turned around at the security checkpoint, waved at her, and then disappeared down the corridor.
That image played on an endless loop in her mind, like a jammed frame of film she couldn't move past.
She looked down, gently resting her palm against her lower abdomen.
Finn, where exactly are you?
Please, just come back safely.
