Howard lit up instantly, like someone had flipped a switch. “It was awesome, man. She’s so cool and smart, gosh, you should’ve heard her talking about the stars. It was so awesome.”
I nodded, smiling like my chest wasn’t caving in.
Stars.
Of course she talked about stars.
Did she tell him how she used to stargaze with her mom? Did she smile that little shy smile when she spoke about constellations and sound like the whole universe lived in her voice?
God, I hated how much I wanted that moment with her.
“You must really like her,” I said, voice tight.
“I do… a lot,” Howard admitted, and he sounded so damn sincere. Like this wasn’t just a fling or some crush. He meant it.
I nodded again, slower this time, my throat dry.
“Did she say anything about me?” Howard asked, hopeful.
Shit.
I hesitated. Then said the only thing I could.
“Um… no.”
Howard’s smile faltered. Just for a second.
He looked down, scratching the back of his neck. “Oh. Right.”
I scrambled. “Hey, maybe she just feels awkward talking about that stuff with me. I’m sure she was screaming and giggling about it with the girls.”
That got a laugh out of him. A soft one. “Yeah. Probably.”
We were quiet for a beat. I started to reach for my gym bag when my phone buzzed on the bench.
I froze.
I stood, chest tight, adrenaline exploding through my veins like fire.
“I…I gotta go, man.”
Howard blinked. “Wait, what? Is everything okay?”
I didn’t answer. I was already up, moving fast, hoodie half-zipped, phone clenched in my hand like a lifeline. My legs carried me out of the locker room, down the hall, and out the damn building.
