I pressed my lips together, my expression flat. "I won't let her get away with this. I'll get revenge for you. Let's go home first, I'll put some ointment on that."
Ryan obediently followed me, but then grinned. "Don't worry about it. I'll get my own revenge. You just focus on your own business. I'll take care of your enemies too. Zephyra, where's Steven now? Where did he take you?"
"He passed out. He's in the hospital."
Ryan looked incredulous. "So he's really sick? He looked perfectly fine."
I didn't want to dwell on Steven, so I glossed over it and we returned to the villa.
After applying some cream to his face, I arranged for someone to find Verna's whereabouts.
Having deep pockets meant I didn't have to think twice about hiring people, and they were remarkably efficient.
By the time Ryan and I had finished dinner, they had located Verna. She'd had a huge fight with Jacob and was now crying in a park.
My eyes turned icy. "Keep the line open. Slap her ten times."
"Understood." The person on the other end complied. Verna's panicked but defiant voice came through the phone.
She sounded like she'd been crying, but there was a stubborn edge to her voice.
She knew Steven was a better asset than her boyfriend, knew how to leverage someone with more resources to pave her own way. Yet, she had this strange pretentiousness, refusing to admit the advantages Steven gave her, insisting she earned everything with her own two hands. It was as if she disdained the wealthy while desperately craving the power their money provided.
Verna laughed coldly. "I never said I was a kind person. What good is kindness when you've nearly stolen my entire life? Zephyra, I didn't appreciate Mr. Lancaster before, but now I know just how good he is, how worthy he is of a woman's love."
"He's rich, powerful, and influential. He's devoted, fiercely protective, and loyal. He fights for me, which is a thousand times better than what Jacob could ever do. He's worth it."
"And let me tell you something else. I knew that guy today was your brother, your cousin, right? I said those things on purpose to provoke him into attacking me in front of Mr. Lancaster. So go ahead, keep causing drama, keep bullying me. The more you do, the tighter Mr. Lancaster will hold on to me."
"From this day forward, I will find every possible way to stay by his side. I will use any means necessary to twist things back to their rightful course and take back what's mine. I will become his Mrs. Lancaster, and you—you're out of the game!"
