Linda wasn't buying it. "If we're going by your logic, you knew Mr. Lancaster first, but Zephyra still took your place. That just means you're pathetic. If Mr. Lancaster had any feelings for you at all, he wouldn't have let you be the other woman; he would have married you!"
"You say you couldn't become Mrs. Lancaster before because Zephyra got in the way. Well, Zephyra and Mr. Lancaster are divorced now, so how come I don't see you married to him yet?"
Verna bit her lip in anger, her fists clenching. "I'm talking to Zephyra. What does this have to do with you?"
Honestly, I didn't want to deal with Verna. Last night, in my anger, I might have taken it out on her, but now that I was calm, I had no desire to get entangled with her.
Fighting over a man was just pathetic.
Even if she had declared she would put things back on the 'right track' and become Mrs. Lancaster while she was getting beat up, I never took it seriously. Not even now that she was Steven's assistant and much closer to him.
But since we were on the topic, I wasn't curious about what was going on between her and Steven. There was just one other thing I wanted to know.
"If you were in love with Steven back then, I could write you off as a coward for not fighting for him at the wedding, for not admitting your feelings, for not even acknowledging any emotional connection between you. But what about your ex-boyfriend, the one who was by your side day and night, encouraging and taking care of you? What was he to you?"
Verna's eyes widened, and for a reason I couldn't understand, her expression turned instantly sharp and hostile.
"Jacob was just a passerby. Just like you are destined to be an insignificant passerby in Mr. Lancaster's life. Everyone has to return to their rightful place. Since Jacob has chosen you now, I have no reason to be polite to him."
For a moment, I felt that Verna was far more ruthless than I had imagined.
Her former angelic demeanor, her life-saving compassion, seemed to have been devoured by something, leaving behind only this ugly shell.
No wonder Jacob said Verna had changed. But he was still heartbroken over her, and that was truly a waste.
Linda gasped beside me. "Whoa, so she's not just Mr. Lancaster's mistress, but also Jacob's ex-girlfriend?! That is some next-level drama. No wonder Jacob has been so miserable lately. He got dumped by a home-wrecker."
"And that poor guy, is it really worth being heartbroken over a woman like this? She's got nothing going for her besides a pretty face."
Verna's breathing became labored, as if Linda had struck a painful chord. "Shut up! You're a designer too, right? I'll have the organizers disqualify you from the competition. Let's see if you can still run your mouth then!"
Linda's face immediately contorted with rage.
I looked over and saw a young man in a black trench coat, exuding an air of nobility, walking slowly toward us.
Linda swallowed hard. "I wonder how much Mr. Lancaster heard. I-I was just talking smack. Mr. Lancaster wouldn't actually come after me for his mistress, would he? I guess you never know. The power of pillow talk is strong. If even you couldn't beat her, I'm definitely toast."
I frowned. Steven had been a complete psycho last night and had really gotten on my nerves. If he started trouble again today because of Verna, I didn't know how long I could keep my temper in check. My patience wasn't exactly infinite.
Verna saw Steven too and a smile touched her lips. "Mr. Lancaster."
But Steven walked right past her and stopped in front of me.
My heart leaped into my throat, and I was on full alert. Linda timidly shielded me. "Mr. Lancaster, don't get physical! Give us a chance to explain!"
Steven ignored her, his eyes fixed on me.
"Why did you run off last night? Is sleeping with me for one night that difficult?"
