I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 12

Her own career progression had been noticeably slower, her daily tasks revolving entirely around his schedule.

Whenever she occasionally complained about the tedious nature of her work, Luke would tell her that if she didn't want to work, she could quit, and he would take care of her.

But his promise of support had an expiration date. It would only last until they grew tired of the relationship, or more accurately, until he grew tired of it.

Now, she wondered how long she could support her mother. For the rest of her life, Sophie hoped. She wanted her mother to have someone to rely on in her old age, and she wanted to be capable of being that anchor.

"Jason has it rough," Sarah noted. "His mother passed away not long ago, and his father remarried and can't help with the kid. Having an older woman around to help will take a lot off his plate."

Sophie laughed at her mother's sympathy. "Mia goes to an exclusive preschool, and he lives in a high-end neighborhood. They have it way better than we do. We should be pitying ourselves."

"Having a job gives me peace of mind. I want to earn my own retirement money and save up a little nest egg for you."

Sophie didn't try to stop her.

During the days she had rested after her surgery, her mind had run wild, often overwhelmed by a suffocating wave of despair. She had felt powerless and fragile.

But these past few days, busying herself with job hunting and house tours had given her more drive than before.

People truly needed something to do.

On Monday, Sophie officially started her job. She attended orientation with her new colleagues, taking eight hours of classes every day on corporate culture and sales techniques, then went home to organize her notes.

She politely declined Jason's invitation to join them for dinner, opting to grab a quick sandwich for herself while reviewing the day's work.

Given the nature of sales, evenings were often reserved for networking with clients anyway.

Their old house had been listed with a realtor for two weeks before they got viewings, and it successfully sold a month later.

Sophie and her mother rented a small apartment near her office as a temporary transition.

Between working, studying, and moving, Sophie's schedule was packed tight. Before falling asleep each night, she reviewed her training materials, and the number of times Luke crossed her mind dwindled.

Keeping busy was the best cure for a broken heart.
