In his sleep-hazed state, Gavin felt the space in his arms turn cold. He opened his eyes to find Sophie already up and getting dressed.
"It's so early. Come back to sleep."
Gavin propped himself up, reaching out to drag her back into his embrace, but Sophie quickly took a step back to dodge him.
"No way. I have to get back before Mia wakes up," Sophie said with absolute seriousness.
Gavin bent his arm, resting his head on his hand with a faint smile. "You're just kidding yourself."
"Oh, please. Mia is in her 'why' phase. She'll interrogate me like a detective. Being cross-examined by her is mortifying enough, not to mention figuring out how to explain this to a kid."
Sophie suddenly remembered how Jason had been cornered by Mia, demanding to know why he hadn't come home, where he went, and who he was with.
She had acted exactly like the strict parent of a rebellious teenager.
If even a stoic, unflappable guy like Jason couldn't handle Mia's rapid-fire questioning, Sophie knew she'd be looking for the nearest window to jump out of.
Gavin was highly amused by her flustered panic.
Who would have thought that after finally surviving their parents' interrogations, they would now be subjected to cross-examinations from a little kid?
"Looks like we need to brush up on our parenting skills. What are we going to do when our own kids start interrogating us?"
"You're thinking way too far ahead," Sophie mumbled, though she couldn't stop the corners of her mouth from tilting upward.
"Get some more sleep. I'll save you some breakfast, you can head over later."
Sophie quietly pushed the door open next door. Sarah had just finished washing up and looked utterly surprised to see her daughter. "Why are you up so early?"
"Mia hasn't woken up yet, right?" Sophie asked in a hushed tone.
"Still fast asleep. Where's Gavin? He didn't come with you?" Sarah glanced toward the front door.
"He's still sleeping," Sophie replied as she slipped into the bedroom.
By the time Sophie emerged in her pajamas, Sarah fully understood what was going on. She offered a knowing smile but kept her thoughts to herself.
"Go catch up on your sleep. Mia won't be up for a while. I'll make breakfast when I get back."
Sarah had already changed into her street clothes, getting ready to head out for her choir practice.
"I'll just grab some water and go back to bed."
Last night had been quite wild, and Sophie's voice was a bit hoarse when she spoke.
Sarah was putting on her shoes when she noticed the ring on the hand Sophie used to hold her water glass. She immediately slipped her slippers back on, walked over to her daughter, and softly called out, "Sophie..."
