I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 203

The autumn rain had been falling steadily for days, causing the temperature to plummet. Just last week, people were still wearing short sleeves on the streets, but now everyone had bundled up in jackets.

Sophie Sullivan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the endless drizzle, a sudden wave of inexplicable irritation washing over her.

Meanwhile, Luke Lawrence and his parents had just landed and were sitting in the car heading from the Seattle airport to their hotel.

He stared out the window at the city—one that wasn't entirely familiar, yet held a profound significance for him.

The relentless rain draped the rugged skyline in a hazy mist, giving it the moody, cinematic charm of a coastal romance.

His first encounter with Sophie had been on a similarly rainy autumn day. Though, she probably didn't remember it.

Back then, she had short hair. She had run out of the lecture hall without an umbrella, holding her backpack over her head to shield herself from the downpour.

Someone had called her name from up ahead, and as she answered, she quickened her pace, crashing right into his chest. Looking flustered, she picked up her bag, kept her head down, and mumbled an apology.

It was also raining on the day she came to his company for an interview.

He had just returned from seeing off a client when he noticed a girl in a black business suit carefully leaving her umbrella by the door, taking a deep breath before stepping into the lobby.

He walked briskly past her without looking closely. There had been many strange faces around the office lately due to the ongoing interviews.

He hadn't taken more than a few steps when he heard a sharp thud behind him. He turned to see the girl sprawled on the floor. She struggled to get up, clearly having twisted her ankle. Her skirt was too restrictive, and after several attempts, she couldn't manage to stand.

She looked up at the receptionist, her face burning crimson, tears welling in her eyes.

In that exact moment, Luke remembered her.

They had bumped into each other in the rain before. He had seen her riding her bike around the campus plaza, and he had even seen her get into a scrappy fight.

Her short hair had grown down to her waist by then. When she fell, her long, ink-black hair cascaded over her like silk.

As he walked over, he realized the true source of her embarrassment—the seam of her pencil skirt had ripped. She tried to cover it with her hands, but the tear was too large, and her hands were too small to hide it.

Her heel was broken, her ankle was injured, and her scraped knee was bleeding. She looked an absolute mess.

They were in the main lobby, with people constantly walking by. Without a second thought, Luke scooped her up into his arms. He glanced at the reception room, hesitated, and then decided to carry her straight into his own office instead.

At first, he hadn't planned on starting anything with her.

He knew right from the beginning that he was a man without freedom.

But somehow, without him even noticing, she had stepped into his life and walked right into his heart.

He thought hiding her away was a way of protecting her, but what she wanted was a love that could stand proudly in the daylight.
