When she got home, Gwen heard about Eileen's three-year sentence and scoffed at the injustice.
"What if she comes after you again when she gets out in three years?"
"Then I'll put her right back behind bars," Sophie replied breezily.
Three years from now, she wouldn't be the same Sophie. With her equity shares coming in, her career was hitting the fast lane. She was entirely confident that by the time Eileen was released, she'd have the power to protect herself and her family.
"What about Luke?"
Gwen leaned in and whispered directly into Sophie's ear while Gavin was in the kitchen washing fruit.
"He went back home. Our paths won't cross again. I just wished him the best."
Sophie had truly let go of everything that had happened between them. From now on, they were just two strangers walking separate paths.
"Well, Gavin can finally sleep easy," Gwen whispered rapidly as Gavin approached, immediately straightening up.
Sophie looked at Gavin with a warm smile as he walked over, naturally opening her mouth to accept the grape he offered her.
She knew Gavin had felt insecure in the past. That insecurity stemmed from her own hesitation and the constant crises Luke's presence had triggered.
But Gavin had never once shown a hint of distrust toward her.
He had driven her to the hospital to care for a comatose Luke, dropped her off to meet Luke in person, and waited silently in the car while she said her final goodbyes.
His patience, trust, tolerance, and steady affection had slowly, silently nourished her heart until it tilted completely in his direction. Now, it belonged to him, wholly and completely.
As they left Gwen's place, Gavin held Sophie's hand. "Where do you want to go for the holidays?" he asked as they walked.
The trial's conclusion had fallen right on the last day of September, leaving them zero time to plan a vacation.
"Everything's probably booked solid by now. Why don't I take you on the 'Sophie's Childhood Tour' instead?"
"'Sophie's Childhood Tour'," Gavin repeated, his eyes lighting up. "Brilliant. We'll spend the break visiting every single place you went to as a kid."
During the holidays, Sophie forbade Gavin from driving. Instead, they rented bikes and navigated the streets of her old neighborhood.
