I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 21

Sophie didn't hear a single word of what Jessica said next.

It turned out he wasn't opposed to marriage; he just didn't want to marry her.

A suffocating wave of despair washed over her, making every breath ache. She clenched her fists, fighting to keep the smile pinned to her face.

Luke's fiancée suddenly walked over, looking slightly annoyed. "The game's already started and you're still chatting. You're going to distract Luke."

Jessica jumped, quickly turning to apologize. "I'm so sorry, Ms. Harper. I was just so excited to run into my old coworker that I wasn't paying attention to the court."

Jessica hurriedly introduced Sophie to Ms. Harper. "This is Sophie Sullivan, Mr. Lawrence's former secretary."

Sophie slowly stood up, swallowing back the turbulent emotions in her eyes, and offered a polite nod.

It was her first time seeing Ms. Harper this up close.

She was undeniably beautiful—delicate and glamorous. Her bright, captivating eyes and slender jawline perfectly complemented her petite, effortlessly feminine frame.

Her seemingly simple outfit was composed entirely of designer pieces. The diamond studs in her ears caught the light, and the bold B.ZERO1 necklace at her throat made it clear she came from serious wealth. She was exactly the kind of woman a man like him would choose to marry.

It was no wonder she carried an air of arrogance, readily blaming Luke's fumble on the court on Jessica's idle chatter.

"You used to be Luke's secretary too? What a coincidence. I've been abroad for years, so I've been wanting to catch up on what he's been doing."

The previously overbearing Ms. Harper instantly switched to a radiant smile, her tone adopting a playful, almost childlike lilt.

"This is Mr. Lawrence's fiancée, Ms. Harper," Jessica hurriedly explained to Sophie.

"You can call me Ellen or Eileen."

Seeing her extend a hand, Sophie politely reached out and shook it.

Eileen's hand was slender and soft, adorned with long, perfectly manicured nails glittering with rhinestones. It was the hand of a privileged heiress who had never washed a single dish.

Of course, Sophie had taken good care of her own hands over the years. They no longer bore any trace of the rough, calloused days of hauling heavy boxes during college.

Luke had an obsession with hands. Back when they used to cuddle up at home for movie nights, he always loved tracing her fingers. Sometimes, he would pull them to his lips, pressing teasing kisses to her skin.

Her fingers were long and graceful. Because he hated the chemical smell of nail polish, she never wore it, keeping her nails neatly trimmed into elegant, natural arches instead.

Sophie remembered a time when a coworker had bought some polish online. During their lunch break, a few girls from the department had gathered to paint their nails, and on a whim, Sophie had joined in.

Later that evening, when Luke went to kiss her hand, he complained about the harsh scent and told her to wash it off immediately.

But things were clearly different when it came to the woman he actually loved. Eileen loved extravagant manicures, and he simply accepted it without complaint.
