"Come on, cheer up, or I'm going to kiss you right here."
Gavin glanced around dramatically, leaning in as if he were actually going to do it. Sophie quickly shoved him away. "Who says I'm not happy? I'm thrilled."
During the drive home, Gavin spent the entire time telling terrible jokes.
Sophie obligingly laughed along. She knew she had to stop being so hypersensitive. Letting every little statistic ruin her mood wasn't helping anyone.
"Oh, those Roasted Chestnuts look incredible."
Gavin's sharp eyes caught sight of a massive line outside a street vendor. He pulled the car over and dragged Sophie out to join the queue.
"After this, we'll go grab your favorite Mont Blanc Cake. Sugar is scientifically proven to boost serotonin."
Gavin wrapped his arms around Sophie from behind, pressing his cheek against hers.
"Stand up straight, there are kids around." Sophie elbowed him in the ribs, warning him to behave.
Sure enough, a little boy standing in front of them with his mother was staring up at them with wide, curious eyes.
Gavin immediately snapped to attention, maintaining a respectable four inches of space between them while playfully winking at the kid.
"Hey cutie, are the Roasted Chestnuts here really that good?"
Two girls, barely in their twenties, walked right up to Gavin and batted their eyelashes.
"It's my first time here, too," Gavin replied politely.
"Cutie, do you mind if we cut in front of you? We're in a huge rush. Please?"
Sophie turned to look at the two girls. They were staring up at Gavin with massive, pleading puppy-dog eyes.
"Excuse me, ma'am, but the cutie already said yes. We won't take up too much space."
Noticing Sophie's annoyance, the girls didn't back down. Instead, they weaponized their youth, calling her 'ma'am' with vicious sweetness.
The insult made Sophie want to roll her eyes into the back of her head.
"Ladies, wedging yourselves between me and my wife is highly inappropriate."
Gavin smoothly took a step forward, completely bypassing the two girls. He wrapped a possessive arm around Sophie's waist and leaned in, whispering with aggressive survival instincts, "I absolutely did not say yes. They are framing me."
The two girls shot them a filthy glare, huffing as they dragged their feet to the back of the line.
"Cutie?" Sophie shot him a distinctly sour look.
Why did she get slapped with 'ma'am' while he was universally declared a 'cutie'?
That night, Sophie's skincare routine was noticeably longer.
Gavin sat cross-legged on the bed, agonizing over the wait. "Hurry up. I'm dying of old age out here."
"Oh? What exactly is dying?" Sophie shot him a wicked look through the vanity mirror. Her hands moved in slow, deliberate upward strokes, massaging the firming serum into her jawline.
"Gwen has officially corrupted you." Gavin vaulted off the mattress, scooped Sophie out of her chair, and tossed her onto the bed. Bold remarks like that required immediate punishment.
"Stop it! I'm not done with my routine," Sophie squirmed, trying to push him away.
"This is way more effective for your complexion than any cream," Gavin pinned her down, cutting off any chance of escape.
"In ten years, the age gap is going to be so obvious."
Gavin let out a muffled laugh. She was still obsessing over being called a 'ma'am' by those teenagers.
"Men age faster when they're thoroughly drained. Why don't you just wear me out?"
Sophie slapped his chest playfully. "Wear me out? Are you serious right now?"
"Yes. Use me. Exploit me. Drain the life out of me so I age faster. We'll be perfectly matched in no time."
