Gavin Gilmore was anxious, so he changed his work schedule at the last minute and took time off with Sophie Sullivan to go to the hospital for a checkup.
They had to wait in line for a walk-in appointment, and by the time their turn came, it was quite late.
The seats in the waiting area were already packed. Gavin let Sophie rest her head on his shoulder to help carry some of her weight.
Sophie teased him, "It's only the size of a soybean right now. How heavy could it be?"
Gavin imagined how the baby would grow in Sophie's belly, transforming from a tiny soybean into a huge watermelon, and began counting the days. "The baby's due date is in November."
Sophie stayed silent, leaning comfortably against Gavin's chest.
Three years ago, when she went to the hospital alone for a checkup, the doctor had also told her the due date was in November. She had lost a child back then, and now God had sent her another.
"Nervous?"
Gavin asked, noticing Sophie's quiet demeanor.
"A little. But I feel much better with you here."
After Sophie finished her ultrasound, Gavin stared at the blurry black-and-white scan. He asked, "Where's the baby?"
"Right now we can only see the gestational sac to confirm it's a uterine pregnancy. A month from now, we'll be able to see the embryo and the heartbeat. The doctor said we need to be extra careful during these first three months."
At Sophie's insistence, Gavin kept the news a secret until she was three months along. Once everything was stable, he finally announced the wonderful news to the family.
Rosemary was the most thrilled. She demanded that Graham Gilmore and Gillian Gilmore bring her over for the Midsummer Holiday. She wanted to stay and help Sarah Sullivan take care of Sophie.
Sarah had signed up for a baby nurse class as soon as Sophie's first checkup ended. She had always regretted that when she raised Sophie, she lacked experience, money, and a healthy mindset. Now that she was going to help raise her grandson, she was determined to be fully prepared.
By the fifth and sixth months, the pregnancy reached a stable period, but it was also the height of summer. Sophie, who was usually afraid of the cold, felt like she had a little furnace inside her belly and became incredibly sensitive to the heat.
She even got a heat rash on her back. It was unbearably itchy, and she reached back to scratch it, leaving several red marks.
