I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 32

Sophie lifted her face from the pillow and twisted around to look at the person sitting on the edge of the bed.

It was actually Luke.

"How did you get in here?!"

Sophie sat up furiously, demanding an answer. The towel wrapped around her chest loosened, and she quickly dove back under the covers, burying her head like an ostrich.

"The front desk opened the door," Luke said calmly, continuing to dry her hair.

"Who gave them the right to let you in?! I'm going to sue them. Get the hell out."

In her anger, Sophie reached out to shove the hairdryer away. The hot nozzle burned her hand, and she snatched it back with a sharp gasp.

"I told them we had a fight and you ran off. I said I was worried something had happened to you. The staff tried calling your room several times with no answer, and they got worried too, so they unlocked the door for me."

Sophie fell silent.

She could picture the exact scene. When Luke set his mind to it, he could charm his way past anyone.

He had deep, penetrating eyes. Whenever he focused that intense gaze on someone, they inevitably believed he was the most sincere, trustworthy person in the world.

She had lost herself in that exact gaze, time and time again.

"Sophie, I'm so sorry I couldn't give you a home. I wanted to tell you after we got back from St. Moritz, but then I thought I should wait until after your birthday. I never expected you to just leave. It's my fault. I kept it from you because I just wanted to keep you by my side for one more day."

Luke sat on the edge of the bed, reaching out to stroke her damp hair.

Sudden clarity hit Sophie. No wonder he had been so impossibly gentle with her in St. Moritz—he had been drowning in guilt.

And on the night of her birthday, they had been tangled in the sheets almost until dawn. He did it out of guilt, and she had responded fiercely, thinking it was her final night of reckless abandon before walking away.

Sophie let out a cold laugh. "What good is an apology? You planned to marry her from the very beginning. Why did you even start things with me? Do you have any idea how important a woman's best years are?!"

"Those seven years were the happiest of my life. I thought they were for you, too."

Sophie felt like her lungs were going to explode. In the middle of the night, this lunatic breaks into her room just to spout this garbage.

"Luke, get out right now. If you don't leave, I'm calling the cops for trespassing and assault."

There was no movement behind her for a long time. Sophie turned her head. Luke was standing quietly by the bed.

"Are you leaving or not?!" Sophie sat up and shoved his chest.

She had put all her fury into the gesture, but the moment Luke's gaze fell on her, she remembered she was naked beneath the sheets. Her bravado crumbled instantly, and she yanked the blanket up tight around herself.

Unable to physically throw him out, she could only hurl vicious insults. Jerk. Bastard. Get out... Sophie cursed until her voice gave out, but Luke remained rooted to the spot.

She grabbed a pillow and hurled it at him. Luke bent down, dusted it off, and placed it gently back beside her.

"What the hell is it going to take for you to leave?!"

Sophie was beyond furious now, her words growing sharper and more toxic.

"Weren't you afraid of walking in on something you shouldn't see?"
