I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 36

With that, he pulled out a second cashmere scarf—this one a soft camel color—and handed it to Sophie.

"It's my birthday, so giving me a scarf makes sense. But what's the excuse for giving her one?"

Gwen never missed a chance to stir the pot, insisting on teasing Gavin.

Gavin's face instantly flushed. He glanced at Sophie with a soft smile and said, "The temperature dropped significantly over the last few days. I was worried you guys hadn't packed enough warm clothes."

"Ohhh."

Gwen dragged out the syllable dramatically. "I knew it. I'm just reaping the benefits of someone else's romance. But thank you anyway, it's very warm and practical."

During the meal, Gwen noticed Sophie entirely ignoring the silverware and plastic gloves, opting to grab the braised pork directly with her fingers.

Since Sophie clearly didn't care about maintaining a delicate image, Gwen figured she had no reason to hold back either. She dug in with equal enthusiasm.

Gavin had worn a warm smile since he arrived, but as his eyes dropped to Sophie's left hand, his expression slowly froze.

Gwen, observant as ever, caught the shift instantly.

She reached over, grabbed Sophie's left hand, and pointed directly at the diamond ring on her index finger. "Pretty, right?" she asked Gavin.

Gavin gave a tight, bitter nod.

"She bought it herself."

Gwen felt she was being far too kind. Initially, she had wanted to tease Gavin a little longer, but seeing the utter desolation in his eyes, she caved and told the truth.

"She's out of her mind. Most people want to attract romance, but she's actively out here trying to sabotage her own dating life."

The visible tension immediately drained from Gavin's shoulders. He let out a relieved laugh and looked softly at Sophie. "I thought I was a step too late again."

Hahaha, Gwen erupted into a villainous laugh. She held up two fingers at Gavin.

Gavin nodded knowingly. He now owed Gwen two massive dinners.

Sophie had originally promised to pay, but while she was distracted, Gavin slipped away to the restroom and settled the bill.

He walked back, catching Gwen's eye, and held up a single finger. Now he only owed her one dinner.

Stepping out of the steaming, fragrant restaurant, the Arctic chill hit them like a wall.

The freezing weather system had swept in aggressively, causing temperatures to plummet drastically that day.

Sophie and Gwen pulled their coats tight and wrapped themselves in the scarves Gavin had just bought them.

It was incredibly warm—much like the man himself: gentle and thoughtful.

"Thank you again for the scarf," Sophie told Gavin.

A taxi pulled up, but there was only one. "Where are you heading?" Sophie asked him.
