Sophie was in the middle of peeling a hard-boiled egg when Eileen suddenly shrieked, "You're engaged too?"
Sophie glanced down at the decoy ring on her ring finger, exchanging a knowing smile with Gavin. The secret behind the jewelry was certainly not something they would ever explain to Eileen.
"I only just noticed! I completely missed it yesterday. When are you two getting married? Luke and I are having our wedding at the end of March."
Eileen beamed, eagerly sharing her own blissful news.
"Um... we haven't set a date yet."
Sophie looked to Gavin for help. It was true—one lie always required a hundred more to cover it up.
Gavin lifted her hand and pressed a soft kiss against her knuckles, speaking in an unhurried, reassuring tone. "I'm currently applying for a transfer out here. We'll set the date as soon as we buy a house."
The chopsticks in Luke's hand froze completely. A cashew he had just picked up slipped from his grip, bouncing onto the plate in front of him and spinning in a dizzying circle before finally coming to a halt.
Back in Mr. Baxter's office, he had noticed the ring on her finger.
He had stubbornly convinced himself it was fake.
In the past, Sophie used to half-joke, half-complain that her mother pressured her to get married every time she went home for the holidays. She had said she was going to buy a cheap ring just to get her mom off her back.
Back then, he knew she was giving him a desperate hint, but he had no way of promising her a future. All he could do was play dumb.
He had told her that if she ever fell for someone else, she was free to leave at any time.
But now that the day had actually arrived, he realized the one who couldn't let go was him.
In the end, the group never made it to The Stone Legion.
Luke claimed he wasn't feeling well and didn't want to go.
Gavin and Sophie were more than eager to head back early and finally get some time to themselves.
Eileen was visibly disappointed but too worried about Luke's health to push the issue. She had to let it go.
On the drive back, Gavin and Sophie sat in the back seat again. He reached over, wrapping his hand around hers, and leaned in close. "Do you prefer a loft or a single-story?" he whispered.
"You want to buy a house?" Sophie asked softly.
"For our life together. How does that sound?"
Sophie looked at him, completely caught off guard. *Isn't this moving way too fast?*
Gavin smiled, resting his forehead gently against hers. His lips brushed against her ear as he murmured, "It takes a long time to close on a place and renovate it. You'll have plenty of time to think about it."
The car suddenly swerved onto the shoulder and slammed to a halt. Luke stumbled out of the driver's seat and yanked open the rear door. "You drive. I don't feel right."
Gavin quickly swapped seats with Luke and restarted the engine.
