I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 72

Before Sophie could even process the insult, she saw Eileen pull a bottle from her bag and swing it toward her.

Without time to see what it was, her first instinct was to shield her head with her arms. Cold liquid splashed over her hair and arms, accompanied by a harsh, burning chemical smell.

"A homewrecker like you deserves to have her face ruined!" Eileen's piercing scream tore through her eardrums.

Amidst the screams of the bystanders, someone rushed over and pulled her into a protective embrace. "It's okay, it's industrial bleach."

It was Gavin.

She heard people saying to call the police, someone yelling about an acid attack, others gossiping about a wife attacking a mistress... a chaotic buzz echoed in her ears.

She felt herself being pulled up. Even though she didn't feel her skin burning, she was too terrified to open her eyes. The moment she saw Eileen pull out that bottle, her immediate thought had been acid.

She let Gavin half-carry, half-guide her into the washroom. She stood still as he cupped clean water in his hands, rinsing her hair, face, and arms over and over again.

The freezing water diluted the pungent smell and slowly brought clarity back to her mind.

"I need to call the cops."

"I already did. It's going to be okay, the police will be here soon. You're safe."

Gavin comforted her softly, gently urging her to lean over the sink so he could continue flushing the chemicals from her hair.

At the police station, Sophie finished giving her statement and cupped her hands over her mouth, blowing on them for warmth.

She was freezing.

A female officer walked over and handed her a dry towel, telling her to dry her hair.

Her coat was completely soaked, radiating the noxious fumes of the industrial bleach.

The shirt underneath clung uncomfortably to her skin, dampened by the water dripping from her hair.

The station had the heat on, and Gavin was sitting right beside her, but she still couldn't shake the chill in her bones.

Gavin helped dry her hair, then gathered her hands into his, rubbing them gently to generate some warmth.

"It's over now. You're okay," he murmured reassuringly, over and over.

When he had received Gwen's call and heard that Luke's fiancée had tracked Sophie down, Gavin had rushed over immediately, fearing the worst. But he was still a step too late.

He could only thank God that the lunatic hadn't gotten her hands on real acid.

Looking at Sophie, who was still trembling from the shock, a wave of sickening dread washed over him.

In the interrogation room, Eileen was still ranting to the officers. "She seduced my fiancé! She's a filthy mistress! She belongs in hell..."

Despite the police warning her multiple times, her curses only grew more vicious.

When Luke Lawrence burst into the station, Eileen was still screaming curses at Sophie.

He looked at Sophie. Her hair was still damp and messy. She was wrapped in Gavin's oversized navy coat, her face deathly pale.
