When the first ray of morning sunlight slipped through the gap in the curtains, Gavin woke up.
His body's natural reactions stirred even faster than his conscious mind.
Sophie was sleeping deeply, using his arm as a pillow. Her face was slightly turned, and her long eyelashes fluttered softly with every breath. Her arms were wrapped tightly around his waist, clinging to him like a child holding a favorite stuffed animal.
She was utterly exhausted from the night before. He tightened his grip slightly, pulling her even deeper into his embrace. She nuzzled closer without waking, the blanket slipping down to expose her bare shoulder.
Unable to resist, Gavin lowered his head and pressed a lingering kiss to her skin.
Sophie opened her eyes, instantly meeting his warm, smiling gaze.
"Did I wake you?"
He felt a twinge of guilt; he had wanted her to sleep a little longer. But with her looking so breathtakingly beautiful in his arms, his restraint had completely shattered.
After last night, their bodies had discovered a profound, unspoken rhythm.
Last night, she had been the one constantly demanding, and he had gently surrendered to her needs. This morning, she yielded entirely, matching his passion. Through the intense, seductive tension of their intimacy, they fused their souls together.
Sophie needed to go home and change. She told Gavin to rest a little longer.
"I'll call you before I head out, and I'll bring some breakfast down for you."
Stepping into the elevator, Sophie deliberately checked the time. Normally, she would be out for her morning run by now, and her mom would be at the park for choir practice.
She really didn't want to bump into her mother. She had hung up the phone immediately after saying she wasn't coming home last night, turning it off to prevent any argument.
She knew she was being willful. But in that moment, her chest had felt so hollowed out, she desperately needed to fill the void—both physically and emotionally.
Pushing open the front door of her building, a painfully familiar figure invaded her line of sight.
Sophie froze, instinctively trying to retreat, but the man closed the distance in a flash and clamped his hand around her wrist.
"You really are a psycho. Let me make this clear: I don't care what you say, I'm never signing that paper."
Sophie spoke through gritted teeth, violently jerking her arm to break his grip.
"I just wanted to see you." Luke reached out again, but Sophie swatted his hand away with her forearm, stumbling backward to put some distance between them.
When she raised her arm to block him, the collar of her oversized shirt slipped aside. A vibrant, strawberry-sized hickey at the base of her collarbone instantly caught Luke's eye.
He had followed her here and stood outside the building all night. He already had a sickening guess as to what had transpired upstairs.
But seeing her wearing another man's shirt, bearing the unmistakable mark of someone else's passion, felt like his heart was being shoved through a meat grinder.
The knife he had plunged into her heart had finally been thrust back into his own—only this time, it twisted much deeper.
