During the spring break, Gwen Grayson needed to return to her hometown to visit her mother's cemetery. Before she left, she invited Sophie and Gavin to join her in Hamilton to see the canola flower fields.
Sophie shook her head regretfully. "I signed up for some online courses. My new job is pretty challenging, and I need to upskill."
Sophie had only reported to her new company a few days ago. She was working as the new assistant for project manager Lydia Langford, starting from the very bottom as an analyst assistant.
Truthfully, the nature of the work was vastly different from her past experience. Before, she had assisted Luke with his tasks, where the focus was entirely on minute details. Now, she was expected to provide her own data analysis and insights, demanding a much higher level of professional expertise.
During her first company meeting, she watched Lydia break down a recently completed merger project. Lydia's logic was razor-sharp, her demeanor calm and collected, and her eyes sparkled with intelligence. Sophie couldn't help but marvel internally—that was the exact scenario she had fantasized about back in college.
If she had stuck to her major after graduation and gained eight years of experience, perhaps she, too, would be taking charge of major projects and building a formidable career by now.
It was no wonder her mother had been so furious and disappointed when she chose to become a secretary right out of college.
Her mother's expectations for her had always been incredibly high. She had let her feelings cloud her judgment, throwing away her major for Luke. Whenever she thought about those seven wasted years, a dull ache throbbed in her chest.
"Rome wasn't built in a day, and three days won't magically turn you from an assistant into a full-fledged analyst. Besides, going out to relax won't stop you from taking your online classes. We promise to keep our mouths shut and not disturb you while you study."
Gwen sat beside Sophie, planting herself with the absolute resolve that she wasn't leaving until Sophie agreed.
After listening to Sophie spend the entire evening raving about how incredible her new boss was—praising her family background, her stellar competence, her gorgeous looks, and her elegant aura—Gwen was practically getting jealous.
They had only worked together for a few days, yet Sophie was raining endless compliments on her female boss. She had never even hyped up Gwen, her absolute best friend, like that.
This time, she was determined to drag Sophie along. Friendship required time and cultivation too.
"Good thing she's a female boss, and good thing she's already married. Otherwise, I'd be getting jealous, too."
Gwen laughed, shooting a playful look at Sophie.
"You two are unbelievably ridiculous."
Teased relentlessly by the two of them, Sophie's original plan of spending a quiet few days studying at home was completely derailed.
Originally, it was supposed to be a three-person trip. But once Mia heard about it, she threw a fit demanding to go, eventually turning it into a group of six.
Six people, two cars. Gwen hesitated for a moment before tactfully hopping into Jason Jenkins's car to help Sarah Sullivan watch over Mia, leaving the older couple to enjoy their private time.
But just as Gwen had predicted, online classes could be taken anywhere. In the car, Sophie listened to her lectures and typed out notes.
Gavin was incredibly accommodating. Whenever she was in class, he voluntarily placed himself on mute, even turning off the car stereo.
That afternoon, upon arriving in Hamilton, the group checked into a bed-and-breakfast near Halloway Village. Gwen took Gavin's car and drove back to her hometown to visit her mother's grave.
