On the surveillance screen, Nevin watched intently as Demi dug in with a huge appetite-first finishing one bowl, then pouring another half bowl from the thermos into it.
By the end, she’d polished off the entire last thermos of creamy rice porridge.
Only once Demi finally got back to work did Nevin press the landline on his desk.
A short while later, Joe came in to report the schedule.
Time flew by, and before long, it was 5 p.m.
Before clocking out, Nevin made sure whether Demi would be working late again tonight.
Then, he headed straight back to the Blackwells’ villa.
“Helga, did you get the fresh shrimp and asparagus?”
“I did, and they’re all fresh, sir. Why don’t I just cook them for you…”
Helga followed Nevin into the kitchen, still feeling a little heartbroken over all those jumbo shrimp that had
gone to waste.
Even after she’d salvaged and cleaned them a second time, they were still perfectly fine to eat.
“No need.”
Nevin rolled up the sleeves of his white dress shirt, folding them to his forearms, elegance edged with a rough, masculine air.
The problem was…
Every time he painstakingly peeled the shrimp, tossed them into the skillet, and followed the recipe step by step, the dish still never tasted the way it should.
To him, the fishy shrimp smell was already obvious; if Demi so much as caught a whiff of it, she’d probably be running to the bathroom to throw up for ages.
And once her morning sickness kicked in, it set off a chain reaction-she’d keep vomiting for quite a while.
Thinking about what Jenna had told him, Nevin couldn help replaying last night’s dream.
In that dream, he’d even mastered the art of flipping a pan like a pro.
Orion came home from school, blinking his big eyes as he asked, “Dad, why are you cooking?”
“I’m cooking for your mom…” Nevin paused, then added “There’s a little baby in her tummy now. We have to make sure she eats well every meal.”
“It’s for the little baby in Mom’s tummy…”
Orion tipped his head back to look up at Nevin, his eyes slowly filling with tears.
Mom didn’t love him anymore. She was going to love the new baby instead.

Nevin was busy turning out the garlic butter shrimp with asparagus and didn’t notice right away that something was wrong with Orion.
Seeing that Nevin wasn’t even trying to comfort him, Orion’s lips trembled, and silent tears slipped down his cheeks.
“So, Dad doesn’t love me anymore either…”
Nevin’s hand jerked, and a sharp shrimp shell jabbed straight into his finger. He turned around and saw Orion was actually crying.
He rinsed his hands, dried them off, then crouched down. “Orion, how could you think that?
“Dad loves you, and I’m sure Mom loves you too.”
Nevin’s voice dropped low. He knew Orion had been affected, one way or another, by Demi not being home these past few days.
“It’s just that Mom’s carrying a baby right now her moods are all over the place. She’s not yelling at you on purpose, but you still shouldn’t push her buttons…
“And besides, Orion, you’re going to be a big brother. Once Mom has the baby, there’ll be one more person in this world who loves you.”
Orion’s eyes went wide, tears still clinging to his lashes as he choked out, “I’m going to be a big brother…”
And the little baby Mom had would love him, too.
At such a young age, Orion already felt the weight of responsibility settling on his shoulders.
All that jealousy he felt earlier vanished into thin air.
All he could hear in his head was that he was going to be a big brother-and that there’d be a baby who adored him.
“That’s right. You’re going to be a big brother, Orion. You’ll help Dad take care of Mom and…” Nevin still wasn’t sure if Demi was having a boy or a girl, so he paused and then said, “take care of your little sister, right?”
