Imprisoned While Pregnant, She's Back for Payback novel Chapter 559

But ...

He swallowed hard, his eyes darting over Steven's face before quickly looking away in fear.

This man was here for ill intentions. He was dangerous—probably came prepared for trouble.

Nicholas.

Jackson couldn't help but think of that name.

He'd heard rumors that Nicholas was someone important—someone the boss had personally told him to keep an eye on. That's why he had paid extra attention from the start. But he never thought that knowing a little too much would one day get him into such deep trouble.

Jackson gave a small bitter smile.

"I only know that Nicholas was a man the big boss mentioned by name," he said carefully. "Most workers here come from far away. They stay for months, maybe years, and only go home during long holidays. But Nicholas brought his wife with him.

Jackson sighed and decided to tell Steven everything he knew.

After all, anyone who dared to come here alone, with that kind of calm and sharp presence, wasn't someone to mess with. If he didn't cooperate now, it wouldn't just be his nephew crying later. He'd probably end up worse.

His eyes flicked to the locked door. The corners of his mouth twitched.

Clearly, this man had never planned on giving him a way out.

"Those two—do they stay together or in separate dorms for men and women?"

"They stay together. The boss told me to give them a private room."

Steven's eyes narrowed. "So ... They're supposed to be working now? That means their dorm is empty, right?"

Jackson hesitated at first but quickly answered, "Yeah, at this hour they should both be working. No one else uses that room."

Steven nodded thoughtfully. "Take me to where they work."

At those words, Jackson's eyes lit up. He stood right away, eager to please.

"Sure thing. Follow me."

Steven didn't miss the sharp gleam in Jackson's eyes, though his expression stayed calm. He rose slowly to his feet.

Jackson rushed to the door and unlocked it. Before he could even turn the knob fully, Steven was already standing right behind him.

Jackson froze as he felt an eerie breath brush against the back of his neck.

As he politely opened the door for Steven, he couldn't resist sneaking a glare at his useless nephew.

This whole mess, he thought bitterly, I owe it to that idiot for bringing the danger into my house.

The three of them walked quietly along a narrow service path meant for supervisors.

On the other side of a thick row of decorative trees, the factory stretched out in full view.

Jackson might've only been a mid-level manager, but with thousands of workers under him, he acted like a small-town king. Even his private rest area looked more like a garden than part of a factory.

Steven kept his focus straight ahead, peering through the gaps in the trees at the rows of busy workers.

When they reached the end of the path, Jackson lifted a hand and pointed. "There. That's them."

Steven's eyes sharpened instantly. He followed the direction of Jackson's finger.

Sure enough, in a small corner of the work zone, Nicholas and his wife sat side by side.

She was sealing up bags. He was passing the finished goods along. Behind them, a narrow door stood open. Several workers were waiting there with carts, ready to haul the next load away.
