Chapter 108
Harper
I had to hold in my laugh while I watched Tiffany’s face in particular.
“You know what? I’m not surprised it cost $30,000,” Uncle Sebastian chimed in. “Just look at the great detail. You’ll have to excuse me.” He waved at a gorgeous lady who was also waving at him while at another table.
As soon as he patted Maddox on the shoulder and began to make his way over there, Tiffany cleared her throat and crossed her arms, demanding for a full price breakdown. I proudly gave it to her and the best part was that I told no lies.
“I still refuse to believe it.” She took a sip of water like that was going to change how much had been spent on my entire look.
“Then it’s a good thing the internet exists,” Maddox chimed in. “I’ll give you all the details you need to find out.”
She was so determined to come out on top that she took out her phone. “Fine, tell me!”
I watched as she typed in whatever Maddox had told her, and when she got to confirm it all, her shoulders rose and fell with rapid breaths.
“Babe, are you okay?” Grayson asked.
“I…I need some fresh air.” She placed her hand on her chest like there was so much pressure building.
After helping her get up, he held her close as he guided her out of the hall.
“That was so dramatic,” Maddox said, taking a seat beside me.
“But what if something is actually wrong with her?”
He rolled his eyes. “There’s nothing wrong with her. You just won. Don’t forget who she is.”
“Yeah, but…”
I trailed off when I looked right at the entrance of the hallway and spotted Grayson’s parents in the company of Mr. Aldridge and Margot. She was holding on to his arm, confidently strutting in some high heels.
“Wow,” I managed to say.
“I told you.” He sighed with a small smile as he also looked on.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
Maybe it didn’t matter to him or maybe it did, but I knew that had it happened to me, it would’ve pissed me
off to see Margot show up, even though it was all an act.
Even though he wanted to act like he wasn’t bothered by it, I spotted his jaw clench as he looked on. It also took him a while to look away from her as he studied her closely. Whatever was running through his mind made the expression in his eyes more intense.
“I just realized something,” I said.
“What?” he might’ve been ready to listen to whatever I had to say, but he still didn’t look away from Margot.
“Margot’s name tag is still here,” I said. “She was definitely coming.”
His forehead thoughtfully creased as he looked down at me. “And I didn’t hear Tiffany express her disappointment at any point that her mom wouldn’t be able to make it. Did she know?”
He asked that question like he expected me to have the answer. His eyes even narrowed when he looked back at everyone approaching, not even forcing a smile.
When they were all close enough, Mr. and Mrs. Ford took their seats at the same table as Uncle Sebastian while Mr. Aldridge and Margot took their seats at our table.
“The decor is so lovely!” she said as she looked around, her gaze, turning scornful the second she glanced at me.
“Good evening,” I said politely to both of them.
“Good evening,” Mr Aldridge said. “You look beautiful.”
“Thank you,” I replied. “You look-”
She chuckled dismissively. “I was, but you know what? The universe knew that tonight’s event was so important that I just had to be here. I had to fight through the pain and just a few hours ago, I felt perfectly fine, so here I am! Oh, there’s Kate!” She waved at Kate as she came over. “Doesn’t she look stunning?”
He finally looked over at me with that blank expression and I subtly shook my head for him to calm down. It was then that his expression softened a little.
“Don’t worry about it.” Kate’s voice was sweet. “I’m just at the next table with Mr. and Mrs. Ford and Uncle Sebastian. I’m still pretty close.”
“Aww, such a sweet young lady. I’m glad you’re still close enough, but that doesn’t change what I said. You deserve to be at this table.”
“She can definitely be part of us if you give up your seat,” Maddox bluntly said to Margot.
I swallowed my gasp.
I might’ve managed to make him calm down a bit, but I guess his blood was still boiling.
“Let’s all just have a good time,” Mr. Aldridge finally said, his voice cool. “This is a fundraiser and I hope for the best.”
I gently squeezed Maddox’s hand and he looked over at me again, his expression softening one more time.
But as soon as Kate spoke again and he looked back at her, his expression hardened.
“Tiffany and Grayson should be on their way back. She needed some fresh air.”
“Is everything all right?” Margot gasped.
“Of course.” Kate assured her. “They’ll definitely be back soon since were about to begin.”
As Kate went on to talk more about the auction, Maddox took out his phone, typed something and the phone in my purse buzzed just a few seconds later. There had to be a link between the two, so I took it out quickly and there it was, the message that he had just typed.
“The event is about to begin and you’re about to see Tiffany and Kate in tears.”
I was so curious that I typed quickly. “What will you
do?”
“You’re about to find out. Tiffany’s first.”
He smirked at me as he put his phone away and I could only wonder what he was up to.
