Harper
I’d been pacing near my bed ever since Grayson had told me he was on the way, my phone already in my hand as I watched the pictures and videos I took of Tiffany and Josh kissing.
It felt like it took him forever to get to my house. I had never been so impatient.
Finally, I heard the sound of an engine pull up in my driveway and I was so quick to get to the living room that I almost tripped over myself while rushing down the steps.
I was already out of breath when I sprinted across the living room, as if the proof would vanish if I delayed.
I opened the door a bit too quickly and widely, then paused, telling myself to calm down.
I stood right in the doorway as he stepped out of his car in his suit, looking as polished as he always did when heading to the office.
When our eyes met, he didn’t even smile at me as he said, “I’m here now.”
“Won’t you come in?”
He huffed as he glanced back at the tinted windows of his car while still approaching my front door.
I stared a bit too long at every inch of him and only looked away when he faced my direction and was getting closer to the doorway.
I moved backwards and to the side so he could come in and as he walked past me, I watched his side profile. His expression was still unreadable but I knew that as soon as I would show him the proof, shock would be written all over his face.
“Have a seat,” I said, pulling him down on the couch with me.
“So, what’s going on?” His tone was flat as his eyes
scanned me.
I swallowed before I could speak. “There’s something you need to see.”
I gestured with my phone, then pulled up the photos and videos I’d gathered. Everything was so solid that not even Tiffany could talk her way out of it.
My hand shook as I handed him the phone, letting him check it all out on his own.
As he looked at the screen, he clenched his jaw and said nothing, not even scrolling to the next picture immediately.
Then, he finally scrolled, watching the video of Tiffany and Josh kissing.
Even after that, he said nothing and had that blank depression, like he was taking it all in.
“I’m sorry. I know it hurts to find out that Tiffany’s been cheating on you. I just didn’t want to tell you without showing you the proof. This is who she is.”
Then, he laughed as he lowered his head. The sound was sharp and humorless. People express shock in different ways and I was under the impression that laughter was his way of doing it.
He shook his head a few times, then raised it to look at me as he said, “Tiffany was right.”
The words made no sense at all and only made my chest tighten. “What do you mean by that?”
He didn’t answer my question. Instead, he rose to his feet and headed straight to the front door with my phone.
I was so confused but followed behind him.
“Wait, where are you going?” I asked.
He swung the door open and stood in the doorway for a few seconds before heading outside.
“Grayson!”
“Follow me.” His voice was low but sharp.
That wasn’t exactly the reaction I was expecting, but I followed him.
He only stopped when he got to his car and leaned against the hood.
“Do I?” He cut me off again, not giving me the chance to speak. “Right now, I don’t recognise you at all and I’m extremely disappointed in you.”
Those words had tears threatening to stream down my face.
“I’m glad Kate spotted you when she did and took this picture of you, following my wife around just to dig up some dirt and when you found nothing, you faked all this just to have something to show me. We all know what’s possible with technology these days and the fact that your profession is-”
He suddenly stopped himself when Tiffany burst into tears, even covering her face with both hands.
He immediately looked down at her, his anger turning into something soft and protective as he comforted her.
“You know I hate it when you cry. I’m sorry I doubted you, babe.” His voice was gentle.
He was still talking to her with a soft expression in his eyes but as soon as he glanced at me, he glared hard like I was the worst person on the planet.
Tiffany sniffled, finally dropping her hands from her face with her mascara already ruined. She didn’t even raise her head just yet, keeping it low like some innocent victim.
“Harper, how could you be so evil that you faked these pictures and videos?” Her voice cracked. “I thought I was starting over when I put an end to my thirst for vengeance, but here you are, still taking shots at me. And babe, it still hurts me that you wanted to come to her defense. Now you know who she really is. I wish I didn’t come here. I fucking hate it.”
“It’s okay baby. We’re leaving right now.” His voice was warm and loving.
“No, you don’t understand. None of this is good for me and I hate that this is happening because I don’t want to make it about me, but…” She hesitated, her voice trembling like it took everything in her to speak up. “This kind of stress isn’t good for me in my condition.”
His forehead creased. “In your condition?”
She shook her head. “This isn’t the right time and I shouldn’t say anything right now, but…”
“Tell me.” His voice was urgent as he framed her face with so much tenderness.
After letting out a shaky breath, she said, “I’m pregnant.”
