Chapter 93
Maddox
The video I posted on my page blew up so quickly that the notifications turned annoying in only a few minutes.
Even though I already knew what the comments would be, I clicked on the post and it was just as I thought. I could count on one hand the number of comments that were purely fun. The rest, nothing but a mix of emotions and full of envy and jealousy.
It was only right that Harper posted something on her page too since that hadn’t yet happened, so I sent her one of the videos to post and tag me.
As soon as she posted, a notification popped up. I had the intention of clicking on it and being the first to like the post, but Grayson beat me to it and just looking at his name made me squeeze the water bottle in my hand.
Despite everything, he was still in her life and I knew what he meant to her.
My chest tightened as I imagined the smile on her face after seeing that Grayson was the first person to like the post.
It wouldn’t matter to her who would like the post after him. I knew that too well. It was for this reason that I clicked off without liking the post and dropped the water bottle a bit too hard. Maybe I was being petty, but at that moment, I didn’t give a shit.
I stepped in the shower to freshen up, changed my clothes and then came to my home office. I had managed to numb my feelings about the post, but still found myself thinking about her. I knew exactly what we were doing with the fake relationship, but something in me didn’t want to cooperate anymore. I wasn’t yet able to describe it, but it was torture not knowing.
I slid the pile of documents to the side, leaning back in my seat and facing the ceiling, like that’s what held the
answer.
Just then,
my head shot towards my desk when my phone began to ring. Relief washed over me as that was the perfect distraction, Uncle Sebastian.
“I was just thinking about you,” I said to him as soon as I picked up.
“Right, like I’m actually going to believe that.” He scoffed from the other end of the line. “Why would you be thinking about me when you have your girlfriend?”
I rolled my eyes. “Just because I now have a girlfriend doesn’t mean she’s all I think about.”
“You do make it seem that way with how you’ve been posting her in just two days! Anyway, I know you can’t help it. That’s what young love does to you.”
I wanted to chuckle to myself at how his words were far from the truth, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it, like there was something in that statement that was actually true.
“You’ve really come a long way. I remember the last time you introduced me to your girlfriends. That was years ago. But now I see a change in you, which came after Harper came into your life. That’s why I hope this lasts forever, unlike my wife and I.”
He burst into laughter like it was the most normal thing in the world to talk about his divorce like that.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” I asked, furrowing my eyebrows with concern.
“Me? I’m great!”
“And how is she?”
He sighed. “She’s having a good time in Paris at a fashion show or something.”
“Are you home?”
“Nope. I have no business being there.”
I tried to pick up on the real emotion behind his tone. “Maybe-”
“Where are you?” he cut in.
“San Francisco.”
He let out a chuckle like he was impressed. “You really took my advice.”
“Yeah, but I haven’t moved yet.”
“Isn’t it funny how you moved not too long ago to London and now you have to move back to San Francisco? You really do want to be close to this girl. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be close to their girlfriend when she looks like that?”
I nodded in agreement like he could see me.
I’d seen Harper in so many ways – when she was broken with smudged mascara, her bare morning face, when she was all dressed up and when she had nothing on. In all these situations, she was gorgeous.
“I can’t have other guys trying to take her away from me because I live somewhere else,” I said.
“You really are serious about her.”
“So serious that I showed her my old room and pictures at my dad’s estate.”
He whistled, “I thought your move back to San Francisco was a big deal but that? My boy is in love!”
I shook my head. “You’re thinking too far ahead.”
“How else do you explain what you did for her? We both know what that room means to you. Not even Kate shared the same experience.”
“The way I see it, this is just the beginning of greater things to come and I just hope that witch doesn’t get in the way.”
I chuckled. “Now, lunch was awful.”
He scoffed. “That was quite low.”
“Why wouldn’t he be?” He clicked his tongue. “I heard that his father secured another contract thanks to Margot. That family will always lick her feet.”
“But you know what? They’ll never try to hurt my girl again in any way.” I glared at my desk like I was back at the Aldridge Estate. “I made sure of that with my warning. Harper’s been hurt enough and I just want her to be happy.”
“Whoa…is this the same Maddox I’ve always known? Talk about being a man in love and super protective. Your tone already sounds like you’re warning me.”
He completely believed that I was in love with Harper and I didn’t want to sound dismissive because that was the plan.
“You know what?” he said. “I’m done just hearing about her. I want to meet her.”
I should’ve seen that coming. If she’d already met my father, it was only fair that she met my uncle as well.
“Yeah, sure.”
“Good! I’ll meet her when I’m back in San Francisco in a few days.”
After the call came to an end, I texted her to inform her about Uncle Sebastian, then tightened the grip on my phone.
I closed my eyes, thinking about how everyone would react if they were to find out there was nothing serious going on between the two of us and I was only trying to protect her.
Around I AM, I took a break and scrolled through my contacts, which were so many, but they were all just a blur until I got to Harper’s name.
She might’ve been fast asleep and I should’ve taken that into consideration, but I wanted to be selfish. I just wanted to talk to her.
I dialed her number and waited, but it just rang and I reminded myself that it was bad timing.
I sighed with disappointment as I put down the phone, telling myself just to go to bed and forget getting back to work.
It took me a few minutes but I finally rose to my feet as I neatly arranged everything on my desk.
When my phone suddenly rang and her name flashed on the screen, I dropped the document in my hand too quickly to reach for my phone.
I even sat back down like that would make her hear me better.
“Did I wake you?” I asked as soon as I picked up, swinging the chair from left to right with a small smirk.
“Nope. I was awake. Grayson just left.”
“What?” I stopped swinging, my smirk fading.
