Chapter 178
“Are you even listening to me, boy?” William’s voice snapped me back to attention.
“Yes,” I replied automatically. “You’re right. I’ll handle this properly.”
“You’d better. That poor girl has been through enough without having her reputation destroyed too.” William’s tone shifted slightly. “Those people were talking about her so cruelly, Sebastien. The things they’re saying… If your grandmother were alive to hear how they’re treating a
Grey mate…”
I felt my own anger rising again at the reminder. “I told you, I’m taking care of it. Catherine Stone won’t know what hit her.”
“Make sure of it.” With that final command, William hung up, leaving me staring at my phone.
I set it down and turned back to my computer, thinking. William was right–this required more than just legal responses. My grandfather’s words echoed in my mind: “She was once the chosen companion of the Grey pack’s Alpha heir.”
I picked up my phone again and dialed a different number–one I rarely used.
“I need information on Catherine Stone’s recent activities,” I said without preamble when the call connected. “Everywhere she’s been, everyone she’s met with. I want to know who put her up to this, and I want to know now.”
After ending the call, I leaned back in my chair, considering my next move. The rational part of my brain told me that Iris wasn’t my responsibility anymore. We were separated, heading for divorce. I glanced at the clock. It was late afternoon already. Iris would have seen the video by now. Was she okay? Was she facing this alone?
Before I could talk myself out of it, I grabbed my phone again and pulled up her contact. My thumb hovered over her name for a moment before I pressed call.
“The number you are trying to reach is currently on another call,” came the automated message.
I frowned, wondering who she might be talking to. Noah Phillips, maybe? Or Ethan Lowell? The thought of either man comforting her made my stomach twist unpleasantly.
“She always tries to handle everything herself,” I muttered, ending the call without leaving a message.
As I returned my attention to the video crisis, my email alert chimed. It was an automated health and safety bulletin from the Grey family’s medical advisor–something I normally would have skimmed or ignored completely. But the subject line caught my attention: “URGENT: Lunar Fever Outbreak Reaches Moonshade Bay.”
I opened it out of habit–as future Alpha, staying informed about potential threats to the pack was second nature. The report was clinical and direct: a new strain of werewolf influenza nicknamed “Lunar Fever had been detected in several packs throughout our territory. While not life threatening to healthy adult werewolves, it caused high fevers, severe exhaustion, and temporary weakening of transformation abilities.
“Perfect timing,” I muttered sarcastically, scanning through the recommended precautions for pack members. The medical team emphasized that while most wolves recovered within a week, those with naturally weaker immune systems should take extra precautions.
I glanced at my phone, considering calling Iris again, but decided against. She clearly had enough to deal with already. Still, I couldn’t shake
