The warm water of my bath lapped against my skin as I sank deeper, letting the herbal scent fill my nostrils. I needed this moment of peace after the chaos of the day. My fingers absently traced the slight curve of my stomach beneath the water, still barely noticeable to anyone who

wasn’t looking for it.

“Your daddy is so confusing,” I whispered to my unborn children. “One minute he’s cold as ice, the next he’s…”

My thoughts drifted back to the car ride home. Ethan had asked Sebastien if he was thinking of getting back together with me, and Sebastien’s response echoed in my mind: “Would that be a problem?” Just a few simple words that had left me speechless. I sighed, sliding further into the water. “Is he just worried about you because you’re his pack’s future? Or is there something more?” My voice sounded uncertain even to my own ears. “After everything we’ve been through, why would he suddenly care now?”

The shrill ring of my phone interrupted my thoughts. I reached for it on the bathroom counter, water dripping from my arm as I checked the caller ID. Rachel. I quickly tapped the video call button.

“Hey,” I said, trying to sound more cheerful than I felt.

Rachel’s face filled the screen, her eyes bright with anticipation. “So? How did it go? Tell me everything!”

I couldn’t help but smile at her enthusiasm. “It was…okay, I guess.”

“Just okay?” Rachel raised an eyebrow, studying my face. “You look exhausted. Did something happen?”

For a moment, I considered telling her about the kidnapping, Themas’s confession, and everything else. But the thought of dragging Rachel further into the dangerous world of werewolves made me hesitate. She already knew about our existence–she didn’t need to know how deadly our politics could be.

“No, nothing special,” I lied, adjusting my position so she couldn’t see I was in the bath. “Just the usual drama with William Grey finding out about the pregnancy.”

“And Sebastien? How did he take it?”

I bit my lip. “He was… I don’t know. But he said something weird on the way home.”

Rachel leaned closer to her screen. “What did he say?”

“Ethan asked if he was thinking about getting back together with me, and Sebastien just said, ‘Would that be a problem?“”

“He said WHAT?” Rachel’s voice rose so sharply I had to lower the volunte

“I know, right? It was so strange. After everything-

“No, no, no. Rachel shook her head vigorously. Don’t even go there, Iris. That man is playing games with you. Again.”

“You are. I can see it on your face.” Her expression softened. “Listen to me. Men like Sebastien Grey don’t change. They just find new ways to manipulate you. Remember how he treated you before? How he ignored you for two years? How he made you feel worthless?”

I winced at the memories. “I remember.”

“And now he thinks dropping some vague hint is enough to make you come running back? Don’t give him that power. Not after everything he put you through.”

I nodded, running my fingers through the cooling bath water. “I know you’re right. I’m not stupid, Rachel.”

“I never said you were stupid. Just…vulnerable right now.” Her eyes flicked to where my hand rested on my stomach. “You’ve got more than just

yourself to think about.”

“I know.” I gave her a small smile. “Don’t worry. I’m not rushing back into anything.”

After a few more minutes of chatting, we ended the call. I climbed out of the bath and wrapped myself in a fluffy towel, my skin prickling in the cooler air of the bathroom. As I dried off and slipped into my pajamas, my mind kept replaying Sebastien’s words and the look in his eyes.

Back in my bedroom, I noticed my phone screen lighting up with a new message. I picked it up, my heart doing an annoying little jump when I

saw Sebastien’s name.
