Chapter 40
Iris’s POV
Water droplets cascaded down my skin as I stepped out of the
bathroom, a towel wrapped tightly around my body. The steam
followed me into the hallway, the hot shower having momentarily
washed away the anxiety of the day. I pushed damp strands of hair
from my face, my mind already drifting toward comfortable pajamas
and the solace of my new bed.
Then I froze.
There was someone in my living room.
My heart lurched painfully against my ribs as I detected a scent that
shouldn’t be here–couldn’t be here. A scent I’d know anywhere.
Sebastien Grey sat in my armchair, his long legs stretched out
casually as if he owned the place. His eyes locked onto mine, dark and
unreadable in the dim light of my apartment,
“What the hell are you doing here?” I demanded, clutching my towel
tighter. “How did you get in?”

Sebastien didn’t answer. He just stared at me, his gaze trailing slowly
from my face down to where droplets of water still clung to my
collarbone and lower. The intensity of his look made my skin prickle
with something between anger and unwanted awareness.
“This is my home,” I said, my voice low but firm. “If you don’t have
anything to say, Grey, I suggest you leave. Now.”
He still said nothing, but I noticed his hands–always so controlled-
restlessly tugging at his tie. With a sharp movement, he loosened the
knot, his fingers working at the top button of his shirt. The
frustration emanating from him was almost tangible, his scent
sharpening with an edge I couldn’t quite define.
A button popped free from his collar, bouncing across my hardwood
floor before settling near my bare feet. I glanced down at it
reflexively.
That was my mistake.
In the split second my eyes left him, Sebastien moved. Wolf–fast.
Inhumanly fast. One moment he was across the room, the next he
towered over me, his broad shoulders blocking the light.
My head snapped up, a gasp caught in my throat. We were suddenly
inches apart, his breath warm against my face. I felt my heart

hammering wildly, my wolf stirring beneath my skin in response to
his proximity.
“Sebastien, what are you-
His hand gripped my chin, tilting my face upward. Before I could
react, his mouth crashed down on mine, hard and demanding. His lips
forced mine apart, his tongue invading without permission. The taste
of him–whiskey and something darker, angrier–flooded my senses.
I stood frozen for a heartbeat, shock paralyzing me as his arm snaked
around my waist, pulling me against the hard plane of his chest. Then
fury erupted through me like wildfire.
With all my strength, I shoved against him, breaking the kiss and
stumbling backward.
“Sebastien Grey, what the fuck do you think you’re doing?” I wiped my
mouth with the back of my hand, rage making my voice shake. “Have
you completely lost your mind?”
He just stood there, watching me with those impenetrable eyes. He
raised his hand to wipe his lips, the gesture slow and deliberate. The
silence stretched between us, heavy with tension.
Then I felt it–his hand on my waist, fingers splaying possessively.

His other hand moved toward the knot holding my towel in place.
“What are you doing?” I hissed, eyes narrowing as I caught his wrist.
“Stop it right now.”
His eyes met mine, and what I saw there made my blood run cold.
