Chapter 41
The sound cracked through the room like a gunshot. Sebastien’s head
snapped to the side, a red mark blooming on his cheek. For a
moment, we both stood frozen, equally shocked by what had just
happened.
My palm stung, but deep inside, I felt a surge of satisfaction. For two
years, I’d swallowed my pride, accepted his indifference, tried to be
the perfect mate. No more.
My chest heaved with each breath as I stepped back.
“Grey, I’m going to remind you one last time: we’ve initiated the
Cooling Period. Please stop interfering in my life.” My voice was
steady now, each word precise.
His gaze slid over me, and his lips curled into a mocking smile. “Stop
looking at me with those Alpha mating eyes,” I added with disgust.
“Doesn’t it make you sick?”
He straightened, his expression darkening. “Cooling Period?” he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. “I don’t recall agreeing to the final mark dissolution. Without that, this marriage can’t end. You
know wolf law.”

I blinked, taken aback by his words. “What are you talking about?
William already agreed to it.”
“William isn’t me,” he said, stepping closer again. “And I’m starting to
think you’re in such a rush to divorce because you’re eager to run to
your lover boy Noah Phillips.”
I almost laughed at the absurdity. “You’re out of your mind.”
Before I could react, he moved again, pushing me against the wall.
One hand pinned both my wrists above my head, while the other
circled my waist, pulling me flush against him. I could feel every hard
line of his body, smell his scent as it tried to overwhelm mine,
marking me as his.
“Let go of me,” I demanded, though my voice wavered.
“Until the Cooling Period is over, you’re still legally my mate,” he
whispered, his lips brushing my ear. “And if you’re really so eager to end this, maybe you should try pleasing me first.”
I felt his fingers at the edge of my towel, sliding beneath the fabric. A rush of cold air hit my skin as the towel loosened. Shame and anger burned through me as I stood exposed, his scent aggressively trying
to cover every inch of me.

“Sebastien Grey, you’re nothing but a crazy Alpha,” I hissed through
clenched teeth.
His hand tightened on my wrists as he forced me to look at him.
“Does it disgust you that much? Being touched by me?” His fingers
trailed along my collarbone, moving lower. “If I’m so disgusting, what
does that make you for marrying me in the first place?”
His words cut deeper than they should have. I turned my head away,
not wanting him to see how they affected me. He grabbed my chin,
forcing me to face him. In his eyes, I saw nothing but cold possession
-no love, no real desire for me as a person. Just his wolf demanding
ownership of what he considered his property.
I remembered his words to William in the study: “Not liking her is
just not liking her.” The memory steeled my resolve.
“Your mother called me,” he said suddenly, his voice deceptively
casual. “She doesn’t seem to know about our Cooling Period.
Interesting that you haven’t told your family.”
A bitter laugh escaped me. “I told you before–whether they believe
me or not is irrelevant. I have nothing to hide.”
His eyebrow raised slightly. “Really? Nothing to hide from the woman
who raised you?”

“I’ve already told William everything,” I countered. “And I couldn’t
care less what Catherine thinks.”
His lips curled into a dangerous smile. “You know, it would be so easy
for me to create new problems for the Stone family in our community.
Your pack’s position is precarious at best.”
I met his gaze directly, no longer the meek woman who had entered this political marriage two years ago. “So what?” I challenged. “Is that supposed to scare me into staying with you? Into continuing this
farce of a marriage?”
For a moment, something like surprise flickered across his face. Then his expression hardened again, his eyes darkening with an emotion I
couldn’t–or didn’t want to–name.
“You’ve changed, Iris Stone,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
I stared back at him, unflinching. “Yes, I have. And it’s about time.”
