She might need his help later, so she made sure to accept his kindness.
Ned was waiting in the living room. When he saw how close the two of them seemed, he relaxed quite a bit and asked the butler to start serving dinner.
“Gigi, try the beef. I cooked it myself,” Ned said, leaning over to serve her a generous portion.
Georgiana lifted her small white bowl with both hands. “Thank you, Grandpa.”
“No need to be so polite with me,” Ned said with a smile.
Then Latham poured her a bowl of soup.
“Thank you,” Georgiana said softly.
Ned shot Latham an annoyed look, but he held it in for Georgiana’s sake.
Dinner was actually quite pleasant.
Before leaving the table, Latham couldn’t help glancing at the untouched piece of beef.
When the meal was over, Latham’s mom, Irene, showed up right on time. She lived in the front building, while Ned stayed in the back.
“Georgiana,” Irene said gracefully, “I want to talk to you.”
Georgiana nodded. “Do you want to talk here?”
“Let’s go to the back garden.”
“Okay.”
Georgiana opened her phone and found Latham’s contact. She texted him, Could you bring my jacket to the back garden? Thank you.
Irene had always gotten along well with Georgiana’s adoptive mom, Helena, but her idea of a perfect daughter-in-law was Helena’s real daughter, Catherine Gates. Irene hadn’t liked Georgiana from the start and had already criticized her once. Georgiana hadn’t forgotten. Back then, she knew it wasn’t smart to push back and she couldn’t reveal the real personality behind her obedient appearance.
Latham replied, Okay.
Irene walked into the gazebo and sat on a stone bench, eyes fixed on Georgiana, who just stood there. There was nothing warm about the way she spoke.
