Haskell’s eyes widened slightly as the implication of her words sank in. “In a way, Larissa, if you ever decided to be a villain, you’d be practically invincible.”
“Naturally,” she replied with a sly grin. “But what can I say? I was born with a good heart.”
She was teasing, but Haskell’s expression was serious. “Kindness itself isn’t rare. What’s truly remarkable is holding onto that kindness after gaining immense wealth and power.”
Larissa laughed. “Well, I’ll take that as a very generous compliment!”
“You deserve it,” he said with a smile. “No amount of praise would be too much.”
For Haskell, compliments for Larissa came easily. He had been captivated by her from the moment they met, and the more he learned, the deeper he was drawn in.
Larissa stretched. “Once I’ve dealt with the situation here at the Judson family, it’ll be the Palmer family’s turn. Any new developments with Sire?”
“Sire knows Rigby’s identity has been exposed, so his old scrap metal business is no longer viable. He had Rigby ask me for a job at the Palmer estate, where it would be safer for him.”
“And you gave him one?” Larissa asked.
“If we’re going to play along with his plan, we might as well go all the way,” Haskell said with a faint smile. “I offered him a position as a gardener. He’ll start as soon as his health check comes back clear.”
“No, you don’t. It’s always wise to be cautious, and it shows you care about me,” Haskell said. “But regardless of whether my grandfather was involved in my mother’s death, we’ll deal with it after I become the heir to the Palmer family.”
“Agreed,” Larissa said.
Power was safest when it was in your own hands.
“Alright, I’m skipping my nap here today. I have to go home and take care of a few things this afternoon,” Larissa said, packing up her medical kit.
She rose, leaned over, and placed a soft kiss on Haskell’s forehead. “See you tonight. Dress sharp. You are, after all, attending as my fiancé.”
