At the Judson estate, the butler informed Neville that the last guest had arrived.
“Sir, all the guests are here.”
“Good. Thank you for your hard work.”
Neville hung up and turned to his wife and daughter. “Everyone has arrived.”
Sapphira put down her lip gloss and beamed at Larissa. “There. My daughter is so beautiful.”
“That’s because your dress design is beautiful, and your makeup is perfect,” Larissa said with a dazzling smile.
“No, it’s because you are beautiful,” Sapphira corrected her, taking her hand. “Let’s go down.”
Neville took Larissa’s other arm.
“Dad,” Larissa said suddenly, “tell the butler that if Vivica shows up, he’s not to let her in until after the guests have finished eating.”
“Vivica didn’t come with Paxton and the others?” Neville asked, surprised.
“No.”
“I know this is late to ask, but Larissa, are you hiding something from your mother and me?”
“It’s complicated, and it’s mostly just my own speculation for now,” Larissa admitted. “But I know Paxton is working with Lucius. They’re planning to use my birthday party to cause a major incident, and Vivica is the catalyst.”
She paused. “Vivica was missing for a while. I found her first and convinced her to play along with me, to see Paxton’s true colors and finish him off for good.”
“I can’t believe they’re still not giving up!” Sapphira’s anger quickly turned to worry. “Vivica adores her husband and sons. Are you sure she’ll cooperate with you?”
“She has her pride,” Larissa said confidently. “She’s so certain of Paxton’s loyalty that she agreed to help me, just for the satisfaction of proving me wrong.”
As they chatted, the string quartet fell silent, and a new melody began to play—one of Larissa’s new songs.
Leopold’s face grew even darker.
“Haskell, listen! It’s Larissa’s new song! It’s incredible!” Avril exclaimed. “How does she write something so amazing?”
“Because she is a true genius,” Haskell replied with a smile.
Watching on the screen at Neverending Night, Honora’s face turned pale at his words.
A true genius? So, in Haskell’s eyes, she was not?
Avril glanced at the sullen Leopold. “Didn’t someone say he was going to conquer the music world?”
Leopold said nothing. He had no rebuttal.
