Standing behind him, Crispin thought his boss was being delightfully cruel. This was the woman who had abandoned him because she thought he was a hopeless cripple. The news that he might be cured must be eating her alive. Of course she wasn’t happy. Not unless he was still willing to marry her, which, Crispin knew, was never going to happen. He had never seen his boss show the slightest interest in any woman other than Larissa.
“Of course I’m happy!” Honora said, her smile strained. “If Larissa can really heal you, Haskell, that would be the best news I’ve heard all year!”
“I can see you’re genuinely thrilled for me,” Haskell said, his tone making it clear he saw right through her.
The implication in his voice left Honora feeling awkward and exposed. Thankfully, Finley arrived just then, limping over from the parking lot.
He saw Haskell and an involuntary flicker of fear crossed his face. His greeting was almost deferential. “Mr. Palmer. You’re dining here as well?”
Haskell gave him a cool nod.
Leopold scowled at Haskell’s dismissive attitude.
“Why is everyone standing around outside?” Solon said, joining the group. “I’ve already booked a private room. Let’s wait inside.”
Honora gave Haskell one last look, but he clearly had no intention of continuing the conversation. “Well, Haskell, we’ll head in then.”
“So he hasn’t given up after a month. What about two months? Six? If Haskell’s legs don’t heal, do you think Zoltan will keep protecting him? Even if he wanted to, the rest of the Palmer family won’t let him.”
“Finley’s right, Leopold,” Honora chimed in. “We should be careful. You heard what Haskell said. He thinks Larissa can heal him.”
Solon, who was walking ahead of them, paused. If Larissa had said she could heal him, then she would.
Leopold, however, was unconvinced. “The Palmers have flown in the best doctors from all over the world for the past month, and not a single one of them could guarantee a recovery. And we’re supposed to believe some village doctor can? Please. She’s just saying that to make sure the marriage goes through. Once they’re married, it won’t matter if she can’t heal him. She’ll already be Mrs. Palmer.”
